Anyone with young ASD children?

Options
I have DD who is seven who has ASD.

She used to be in a special needs unit for reception year but for y1 and y2 has been in a mainstream class with a full time one to one helper.

Her attitude towards is horrible and makes me feel like a big piece of rubbish every day :( she shouts and screams at me and everything is my fault. She does this to no one else.

She also has a very short temper with her sister who is only 18 months old.

My son is 11 and has Aspergers. SOunds like you are having a tough old time at the moment. Have you contacted Carers support or the school to talk through how hard you are finding it at the moment?

(((((HUGS))))) I have a 5 year old who beats me up but who is otherwise adorable (probably ASD/ADHD and definitely severe sensory problems etc).

Have you spoken with the school, consultant etc. It may be that they can think of strategies to help you. And you may be entitled to help from SS, especially if her sister is going to be at risk from her behaviour.

I want to hug you both as I no longer feel like its just me.

My DP is fab with DD but he works long hours as I was made redundant at the beginning of the year. I have no idea what services are available to us or any help, I feel like I'm all alone in this and drowning in a sea of stress.

Ok, there is LOADS of support out there. http://www.autism.org.uk/

Go here first, they have lots of info. What area are you in? Most schools have a Parent Support Adviser or Family Link Worker pare of their job is to help you get swift and easy access to services.

Where I live we have a really vibrant asd parent support group which meets once a month. A lifeline.

I know a fair bit from a mix of work and real life! There are also lots and lots of asd pages on facebook too which I find very useful.

Ask away! And thanks for the hug!

    The Misunderstood Child

I am the child that looks healthy and fine.
I was born with ten fingers and toes.
But something is different. somewhere in my mind.
And what it is nobody knows.

I am the child that struggles at school,
Though they say that I'm perfectly smart.
They tell me I'm lazy-can learn if I try-
    ...
But I don't seem to know where to start.

I am the child that won't wear the clothes
which hurt me or bother my feet.
I dread sudden noises, can't handle most smells,
And tastes- there are few foods I will eat.

I am the child that can't catch the ball
And runs with an awkward gait.
I am the one chosen last on the team
And I cringe as I stand there and wait.

I am the child with whome knowone will play-
The one that gets bullied and teased.
I try to fit in and I want to be liked,
But nothing I do seems to please.

I am the child that tantrums and freaks
Over things that seem petty and trite.
You'll never know how I panic inside,
When I'm lost in my anger and fright.

I am the child that fidgets and squirms
Though I'm told to sit still and be good.
Do you think that I choose to be out of control?
Don't you know that I would if I could?

I am the child with the broken heart
Though I act like I din't really care.
Perhaps there's a reason God made me this way-
Some message he sent me to share.

For I am the child that needs to be loved
    And accepted and valued too.
I am the child that is misunderstood,
I am different-but look just like you.

And this one appeared on my FB page today:

    Autism Night Before Christmas

Twas the Night Before Christmas and all through the house
The creatures were stirring... Yes, even the mouse
We tried melatonin and gave a hot bath
But the holiday jitters they always distract

The children were finally all nestled in bed
When nightmares of terror ran through my OWN head
Did I get the right gift the right color and style
Would there be a tantrum or even, maybe, a smile?

Our relatives come but they don’t understand
The pleasure he gets just from flapping his hands.
“He needs discipline,” they say “Just a well-needed smack,
You must learn to parent…” and on goes the attack

We smile and nod because we know deep inside
The argument is moot let them all take a side
We know what it’s like to live with the spectrum
The struggles and triumphs achievements, regressions…

But what they don’t know and what they don’t see
Is the joy that we feel over simplicity
He said “hello” he ate something green!
He told his first lie! He did not cause a scene!

He peed on the potty who cares if he’s ten,
He stopped saying the same thing again and again!
Others don’t realize just how we can cope
How we bravely hang on at the end of our rope

But what they don’t see is the joy we can’t hide
When our children with autism make the tiniest stride
We may look at others without the problems we face
With jealousy, hatred or even distaste,

But what they don’t know nor sometimes do we
Is that children with autism bring simplicity.
We don’t get excited over expensive things
We jump for joy with the progress work brings

Children with autism try hard every day
That they make us proud more than words can say.
They work even harder than you or I
To achieve something small to reach a star in the sky

So to those who don’t get it or can’t get a clue
Take a walk in my shoes and I’ll assure you
That even 10 minutes into the walk
You’ll look at me with respect, even shock.

You will realize what it is I go through
And the next time you judge I can assure you
That you won’t say a thing
You’ll be quiet and learn, Like the years that I did
    When the tables were turned…….

I work at a specialist assessment Nursery with children with statements for ASD, social communication disorder or global delay. I second the autism website and I'm sure if you do a search you'll find other forums- maybe even groups where you can meet if that's something you'd like? I held a coffee session at my Nursery the other week and heard many parents say they struggle at home as their children may behave in different ways and they feel isolated.

esmf73- can I ask what PDA is please?
I loved those poems daska & 365days- really valuable insight for me into living with a child on the spectrum- it's one thing to work with children for 6 hours a day but to live with them 24/7 is amazing in my eyes! (Hope that doesn't sound patronising as it's not meant to!)
Married my wonderful husband February 2013!:happyhear
I want to wear my beautiful wedding dress everyday- it would make shopping so much more fun, I mean, people go shopping in their pyjamas these days.......
    Must STOP spending!!! :)

Ds is 13,severely autistic and beats the bloody crap out of me.

    You're not alone x

On the upside,it's because we're relied on to make everything right for them and they feel safe enough with us to let it out x
