despite this I would tell anyone that asked to avoid the area of Newcastle I live in like the plague due to the feral kids who delight in breaking windows and damaging cars - this is the sort of info "CL" needs to know.

The North East is a huge place though isnt it, and Bishop/Shildon is quite a distance from Newcastle\Durham though. I just wanted to let people know that we all are not bad in the North East......theres some canny ones (sorry) :D

Yeah I do see what you are saying and if people can give an accurate report of the area then its a good thing.

No apology necessary - I don't know Bishop at all but my experience of living about 15 miles north (near Lanchester) and visiting friends in Ferryhill suggests to me that CL is probably doing the right thing buying in County Durham rather than more urban areas like Newcastle/Sunderland/Middlesbrough.

As other have said Bishop Auckland and Shildon is quite out of the way of Durham and Newcastle. They fall under the county of Durham, but not the physical area, and it shows in amenities and price. Personally I would also avoid Ferryhill. Though with the properties there you will get more for your money. Bishop has local amenities such as: various primary schools, 3 Comprehensives (know 2 of them have 6th Forms), a College (full of charvas - unfortunately), train station with links to Darlington and smaller villages on route, large Bus Station, Hospital, and thrown in amongst it there are some lovely locations such as the Bishop's Park.

Commuteable to Durham and Darlington, approx 13miles each way (North and South respectively) Newcastle is further. It has nightlife that comes alive on weekends, whether you think it is good or crap. Shildon has a much more limited amenities. It is a bit closer to the commute to Darlington though. Probably 10miles from it.

It would be too difficult to list all the safe and areas to avoid, I guess you could post some properties on here and we could give our point of view?

Nice to see there are lots of people from this little area though - hi guys! :D

I was wondering about 2 properties that had been put forward, one in "The Nurseries" in Bishop and another in Foundry Street in Shildon?

i think you woulnt have a problem with shildon its little and not alot of trouble, i think its more small famiely that live aaround there. but west is ok, its just a bus ride away from the town centre witch has trains, bus stations. also there are about three schools in the town centre so u would prob have no trouble getting people to rent from you. But i would live in west as its known to be abit rough if you no what i mean.
