I want to buy in the North East of England, between Newcastle and Durham (Bishop's Aukland or Shildon perhaps) and wondered if anyone could recommend an estate agent or solicitor in the area?

You could try https://www.pattinson.co.uk for starters - as well as normal sales have a look at their auction property lists; there are normally plenty of durham pit-village properties at the lower end of the price list.
Here are a few Bishop Aukland example properties from next weeks auction, to give some indication of the price range:

Just in the throws of finishing buying a house here (in Ferryhill). Try
Reeds Rains
Robinsons
Dowen
Peter Clark - mainly ferryhill, sedgefield, and spennymoor
Pattison (as previous poster mentioned)
Bairstow Eves
Halifax
Broadley & Coulson
Bit confused as to where you want to buy as both Shildon and Bishop are not between Durham and Newcastle - do you mean generally near those places or tyneside/wearside generally?0 -
Yes, I was wondering the same thing as Durham/Newcastle are not actually Bishop or Shildon area.
Dont go to Ferryhill, its a dump :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Thanks, I'm not from the area, so I've probably got it wrong. I want to buy a rental property in the area (my sister has one in Bishop Auckland), but I want to make sure I'm getting a reputable estate agent and solicitor. I was interested in a 2-3 bed terrace. Anyone know the general price they are fetching in the area, and which streets are the "good" areas. I would want something near a primary school and on a bus route.0

I dont know Bishop that much but between Bishop and Shildon then id deffinately go for Bishop. I only ever go to Bishop to do shopping, it has Asda, Morrisons where as Shildon only has the Co-Op (big food shop).

We have used Smith Roddams solicitors in the past and always found them to be very good. Their telephone number is 01388 6030730 -
Hi just found this and thought it might be useful for you.

 Not as much of a dump as, say, Bishop!! Bishop town centre scares me a little (though I do like that new cake shop) No I agree, parts of it are really horrid (so bad they're knocking it down), but where I am moving to is not too bad.
Not really much choice in where I buy though - I'm a FTB and all the btl have priced a lot of areas out of my price range.
2-3 bed terrace in Bishop Auckland - Bout £90000. Why don't you do a search on rightmove as it'll give you a more accurate idea0 -
I'd appreciate it if someone could recommend a few streets that would be in a good area and that would suit someone wanting to rent (near shops, bus route, school, etc.)0

Some of the houses at Ferryhill remind me of Sedgefield, especially near the leisure centre. Like any area though theres good and bad areas....I was just working you when I said Ferryhill was a dump though

I know someone who used to live in Bishop so hopefully I will see her when I pick little un up from school and ask her about any no go areas in Bishop. But I personally cant reccomend areas, also what price ish are you looking at ?0 -
I have gotton some prices around £80 - £85k, but would like a little piece of mind that I have asked as many people as possible before I buy in the area.
I really appreciate everyone's help as this is my first venture into the buy-to-let market, and want to be as cautious as possible.0
