Paypal chargeback

Hi, I'm looking for some advice. I'm fairly new to eBay and decided to sell some clutter etc around the home. Just over month ago, I sold an item for approx 50 quid. The payment was made same day and as I was off work I even posted the same day through Parcelforce. I have confirmation that the buyer received the item as after tracking it shows their signature and name on the tracking page. PayPal released the funds into my account shortly after and I assumed that was that. However, yesterday, I had an email from PayPal saying that the buyer had requested the money back without any reason. After logging into my PayPal account I now have a negative balance for the amount they paid as I don't keep any money in the account. Being new to eBay and PayPal I didn't understand what was going on so firstly emailed the buyer a polite email asking if they have any issues (they haven't raised any disputes or given any feedback prior to this). They haven't replied as yet. Being concerned about this I rang PayPal last night who said they can't comment as the case is under review but they will normally ask for proof of postage etc (which they did today). I have provided the tracking number but am still none the wiser.
My questions are, why has this happened? It's obvious the buyer has received the item and if it was damaged etc why did they not contact me first? Secondly, as there has been a negative figure on my PayPal account, is my credit rating affected? I just think its unfair that I have had this money debited from me when I have done nothing wrong.

Because there are low lifes on ebay that do this sort of crap0

Sounds like an 'unauthorized use of the account' claim or possibly a bank chargeback.
Have you uploaded a scan of the proof of posting certificate?0 -
Yes but surely if it was unauthorized, the wouldnt have been expecting the item in the first place to then go and sign for it, keep it for a month then claim the money back?
I don't have access to a scanner but I have given them the tracking number, which when entered on parcelforce website it shows the buyers address name and picture of the signature given to sign for it.0 -

As to why it happens, there are loads of reasons, stolen credit card, family member used the account without permission, hacked account, the buyer wants a free Christmas, take your pick.
However,
To win a case like this, you need to show your proof of posting. Tracking I believe, is seen as proof of delivery. Yes I know, how can it be delivered with out you posting it, but proof of posting is what is required in a chargeback case.
They may well just go with the tracking, but I would get a scan of the certificate and upload that as well.

Unfortunately in the past few years the amount of scammers buying items on ebay and using ebays and paypals policies to claim back payments have increased massively.
Sooner or later there will be an pro-ebay poster along to give their opinion.
Mine, personally and FWIW is that ebay is a great place to buy but a very risky place to sell whatever caveats you place on protecting your own self as a seller.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.0 -

As long as the seller scans and uploads proof of posting they have PayPal seller protection. OP, as others have said you need that proof uploaded, don't rely on the tracking.
Best to work out how to protect yourself rather than waste energy with conspiracy theories.
Also of course for long term sellers we appreciate the fact that we have a great deal more protection now than we ever did have. About 5 years ago we would not have had this protection against a bank chargeback .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You should be covered by paypals rules if you've the tracking receipt, at worst at least you've cleared out some clutter so aren't really out of pocket.0

PayPal said that the tracking number should be fine but il have to find someone with a scanner etc. Unless a photo upload will work.
To be honest may only be 50 pounds but I'm gonna fight for that as much as I can, however I really am concerned if this is going to affect my credit rating, any ideas?0 -

It cannot affect your credit rating at all.
Do upload the proof of posting, do not rely on what a CS agent says on the phone - paypal are often funny about the difference between a tracking number and POP.
Incidentally we are all assuming you had seller protection, the other points you needed to have complied with were 'sent to the address paypal gave you' and 'sent within 7 days'I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. you are making the same mistake a lot of people make and mixing tracking with proof of postage.
For some reason paypal actually need the proof of posting to defend this claim. By all means upload copies of both, but the POP is the important one for a bank chargeback.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
