Crikey sounds painful! his previous employers have caused him no end of grief .. we had to chase all the money they owed him which took ages and I`m assuming its because of them the code is wrong grrr!!!
I`m on the case now, thank you to you an jem for your help. Got it all broken down so ready to share this info with with HMRC. Wonder how long it will take them to sort out (I`m assuming it can be sorted out?).0 -

The relocation has caused issues, yes. One it has caused him to go onto a BR tax code back in August which is now being used with the new employer and two, his only P45 doesn't tell anywhere near the whole story of his earnings from April till Joining the new firm.I`m on the case now, thank you to you an jem for your help. It should be easy enough to get onto an 810L M1 code if you tell HMRC that it's his only income. However sorting out the rebate may take longer but have all the details (including the tax reference of his previous job ) ready to give them.
Let us know how you get on.0 -
Thanks for your reply. I was going to get him to ring first thing but forgot he was working! will see if they are still open when he gets back.
I have every payslip from April so hope all the info HMRC will need is on them. Where will I find the tax references as the payslips just have employee number (his NI number is on all can they find out from that?)
Thanks again.0 -
In general (and it's all changing next tax year) HMRC do not know what people earn until after year end or when you change jobs and a P45 is produced.
So in your OH's case they should have his P45 information but won't know about his current earnings.
As Jem has said, ensure they know he has changed jobs but only has one job; that should be sufficient to get him a 810L M1 code so he gets a monthly tax allowance (rather than BR where he pays a flat 20% of everything).
Better of course to get a 810L code which will get his overpayments back this tax year.0 -
Its sorted! Thank you, thank you, thank you, I`m so grateful.
Rang HMRC spoke to a fab bloke asked me for a couple of details off his most recent payslip..said please hold on for a couple of minutes...came back and said tax code is adjusted to 818L which will be sent to new employer and a refund for overpaid tax will be forthcoming via his wages. He mentiond a figure just under £700.
Think I need chocolate to celebrate! Thanks again x0 -

818L included an extra allowance for £80 as the normal tax code is 810L. It could be for something like uniform washing. Did this apply to your husband and does it still apply?and a refund for overpaid tax will be forthcoming via his wages. He mentiond a figure just under £700.
That sounds a good amount. However do they have all of the figures, especially from the first job before the relocation? If you have total figures of gross taxable and tax paid, we could check it for you.
For your own piece of mind, I would try and get the P45 from your husband's first employer before the relocation.0 -
Hi
Yes he is a driver and wears a uniform which has to be washed, so assuming thats the extra £80.
I went through all the payslips and added it all up and worked out the tax due minus the personal allowance and thought it was approx £625`ish. I`m thinking it is good (slightly more than what I worked it out to be)
He said he had taken into account all money paid to him from April, and the allowances that hadn`t been allocated - said he would confirm it all in writing.
Total gross of all the money he has been paid is £12477.48 (total tax he has paid is £1895) this is April to 31st Dec.
Thank you.0 -

Sounds about right.Total gross of all the money he has been paid is £12477.48 (total tax he has paid is £1895) this is April to 31st Dec.
Thank you.
Taking those figures, it would be £12,477.48 minus 9 months of personal allowance at £6138.75 (£8185/12*9) which is £6338.73. Tax at 20% is £1267.75.
Tax paid is £1895 minus tax due of £1267.75 leaves £627.25 overpaid. So not sure where they get just under £700 but hopefully the letter will tell you.
Anyway glad you got it all sorted.0 -
Similar figure to what I worked out..if he gets this then thats fine if he gets a bit more is a bonus! I`ll let you know when we hear from them.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.0 -
