    Happy New Year to you
Many thanks for replying. Didn`t realise they would be able to sort it over the phone thought he would have to put it in writing, was going to send it recorded delivery so we would know they had it.
If hubby makes the call to HMRC do you know if they would speak to me if he gives his authority (he doesn`t have a clue about any of this!). We`ve not had to ring HMRC before.
    Many thanks

Although there is np guarentee they will sort it on the phone, it's usually better to phone because they can often deal with the problem immediately whereas letters can take months to answer.
Sadly sending it recorded delivery won't speed it up.

And yes, HMRC will deal with you once your OH gives his permission to do so.

Thanks jem16 - Yes the P45 was handed in 2 months ago to his new employer, so have the old firm put the wrong code on it? when it was handed in we assumed it was correct.
Thanks again to you both, we`ll get onto HMRC next week.
I`ll write out details off every payslip since April - gross wage, tax paid, tax code and (NI if they need that).
We`ll let you know how we get on...fingers crossed.

I couldn't say if it was correct or not. What was the tax code used on his August 12 payslip?

They are open tomorrow - why wait?

Didn`t know they are open on a Saturday? do we just ring helpline or try for our local office (which it seems is the office his new employer uses)

Tax coes April, May, June and July it is 818L
    August BR M1
August OT M1 (this was overtime owing from June)
Sept OT M1 (this was money paid when he had left)
    Sept BR M1
Nov OT M1 (this was money owing from June)
    New employer
    Oct 810LM
    Nov BR M1
    Dec BR M1

    Thank you

The normal contact number for HMRC appears to be 0845 300 0627
Tax coes April, May, June and July it is 818L
    August BR M1

Which begs the question - why the change from the previous 4 months? Did your husband receive a P2 coding notice to explain the change?
August OT M1 (this was overtime owing from June)
Sept OT M1 (this was money paid when he had left)
    Sept BR M1
Nov OT M1 (this was money owing from June)
    New employer
    Oct 810LM
    Nov BR M1
    Dec BR M1

    Thank you

Which job does each tax code apply to?

Aug OT M1 this was overtime owing from the first employer the one he had worked for for 19 year
Sept OT M1 this was relocation allowance from being relocated to another depot (another arm of the same company)
Sept BR M1 this was his final pay as he took redundancy after being relocated
Nov OT M1 this was overtime owing from June (from first employer)

    Current new employer
Oct Nov and Dec is where he is working now.

Sorry this is so confusing. He has received no P2 never heard of one before.

Those are understandable as they sound like payments made outwith his main pay.
Sept BR M1 this was his final pay as he took redundancy after being relocated

Sounds like after the relocation, he was put onto a BR tax code. It seems it was taken as a new job with no P45 from his first employment. Does he have a p45 from before his relocation?
Nov OT M1 this was overtime owing from June (from first employer)

Again understandable as an after P45 payment except for the fact that he doesn't seem to have a P45 - or you haven't mentioned it.

So new employer used the emergency tax code - did he complete a P46 and then hand in his P45? Once the P45 was used they correctly used the BR tax code as that was what was on the P45.

They may take your figures over the phone or they may want to see actual P45s before issuing a cumulative tax code. However by phoning they should at least move your husband onto an 810L tax code even if it's non-cumulative although this will mean he won't get any rebate until the cumulative tax code is issued.

    Hi jem16
No he was not given a P45 from first employment. His job of 19 years was made redundant but he was given the chance to relocate to different part of company on 8w trial. He took the redundancy and did not stay after the trial.
No he has not completed a P46 he just handed in the P45 given to him when he left after the 8w trial.
Tax office should have the only P45 he was issued with (this was given to his new employer). Can you tell me what you mean by
    non-cumulative and cumulative tax code?
    Thanks again.

A cumulative tax code takes into account the total earning since April and the total tax paid (so any overpayment of tax is automatically corrected) whilst a non cumulative code treats each month separately and any previous overpayment will need to be reclaimed at tax year end).

However your OH has the worst of worlds with a non cumulative tax code and also one without the normal tax allowance.

so BR code is bad, so something like 810 M1 (non cumulative ) will be better but best is 810L (and correct).
