I would have frozen it and reheated it at a later date, I have done this and am still living at 63!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi,

Yesterday I cooekd a whole medium chicken. My OH and I ate the breasts on our sunday lunch. We then stripped all the meat off it and had it in the slow cooker overnight to make stock. I have made a vegetable soup with the stock this morning and when it cooled i stirred cold chicken into it so that I can freeze it. Sorted.

BUT i still have chicken left. So I wanted to do a chicken and leek pie but i need advice. I have always been told you shold only reheat chicken once so if i bake the cooked meat now in into a white sauce in pastry to freeze it will mean i won't be able to reheat it wont it? As it will already have been heated twice. We don't want to eat it today for tea as we have plans. Is my only option to freeze the chicken meat and make the pie on the day we want to eat it??

I wouldn't normally worry to hard about these things but I am pregnant and not had it easy (was carrying twins and lost one) so I really can't be taking any chances.

If anyone has any ideas on reheating the chicken i would be really greatful. It's the only reheat once thing that led me to stir in the chicken pieces cold to my soup so that when we defrost it we can reheat it.

Am I making any sense?? Looks a bit rambly!

Erm... hmmm... an awkward one, this :)

Yes, you're right, reheating more than once can be a bit iffy, but by the same token, cooking right through is OK.

Your chicken bits should keep OK in the fridge for three days or so (if well covered) if you want to make and eat the pies soon; otherwise, perhaps a better option would be to assemble your pies cold and uncooked (or cook whatever inside it needs to be cooked), then assemble the pie when everything is cool and freeze it "raw". Then defrost and bake it on the day you want to eat it.

Hiya I have done a search but cannot find an answer to my query, sorry if it has been asked before.

I am making a roast chicken and will use the leftovers tomorrow to make chicken nuggets (in batter), my question is can I make extra nuggets tomorrow leave them to cool then freeze them to reheat at a later date or will this mean the chicken will have been reheated too often?

    Thanks in advance.

I think you would be reheating too many times. You could freeze the meat then make nuggets at a later date, thereby reheating once only.
    Hope this helps

  • i was just wondering when people say that they have a roast chicken and then for the next day and the day after use the leftovers,

is this safe to do, can you cook chicken again.. i thought that once chicken had been cooked.. it couldnt again

could you clear this up for me.. as ive been feeling uneasy at the thought of using the left overs .. apart from sandwiches :D
  • you can cook, cool it down as quickly as poss, then reheat it once - make sure it is reheated until it is piping hot though.
  • As above - the remains of Sunday's chicken roast reappeared yesterday as part of a stir fry last night.
