Supermarket Shopping Article Discussion

  • Noticed over the weekend that all the big supermarkets have all increased the cost of butter and marg by 15% - 20 % .Also they have increased by the same amount on different brands. Are they price-fixing ?
  • Not too sure if these have been mentioned already, but they are worth trying out....
A shopping list is a great idea, especially if it is used with a menu planner. Decide what meal you are going to have each day and only buy those ingredients (excl. milk/bread). Our weekly bill (excluding meat from a real butchers) is normally around £30.00 for a family of five. OK, so we eat a lot of eggs as we have 12 chickens, but you will find you might knock as much as 50% of a weekly shop.

I disagree with the idea of downing a level, e.g. buying own brands. Be careful if doing this and use the 100g/1kg price comparisons often printed below the unit cost of items. Cereals are a classic example and I often find that own brands work out more per kg.

  • It is a good point regarding buying online and getting delivery you cannot control the quality.

Great for convenience but if the food does not last as long then what is the point.

    Cheers great post.

Not sure if this is the right place but I was told today that tesco are changing their policy of adding points from barcoded receipts onto clubcards.Notices will be going up stating only 2 receipts at a time and no older than a fortnight as apparantly "Tesco suspect people are just picking them up of the pavement". Deary me what ever next, whistles and walks away...
"Sometimes life sucks....but the alternative is unacceptable."
  • I know a lot of you people shop at Tescos but I heard from Tesco staff themselves, that you are cheaper buying from Morrisons. I heard from a former staffer that she saves £30 a month on Morrisons. I found I am saving a considerable bit by switching.
Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you can't get more time
  • I tried that down shifting thing where you buy one brand level lower than usual. I didn't do it for every item I bought but I would say about half of my shopping was done following this method.

Instead of paying £70+ for my shopping the bill came to £55. I was surprised by the saving and so far I have not noticed any real difference in the items I bought (food and cleaning products).
  • Here are some really simple cash-saving tips. Take a list and use cash only.

    1. If you are only nipping to supermarket for milk, bread, few extras etc. Try leaving debit card at home and taking cash only eg, £5 or £10. It's amazing if you have your card when you go shopping how easy it is to be tempted to buy a magazine, DVD, T Shirt, new 32" TV etc.

    2. If you've got a budget for your weekly shop say £80. Take it in cash with you. Ask your partner/children to help with mental arithmetic (helps with maths/numeracy!) or take a calculator. Then there's no danger of going over budget. If you get to the till and it comes to more than your budget, then a smile and a "Sorry, I'll have to put one of these bottles of wine back!"

You'll find your shopping trips become a lot more frugal and you'll also spend less time in the supermarket.

I noticed that the Bisto Gravy Granules have changed their recipe and the labels slighty different and the lids are a different color, so Lidl must be selling the off old ones cheap, unless you got the new ones, in which case what an excellent buy. ( I prefer the new taste of the new recipe ones)
