unaware import fees?!

I purchased a tablet from a US seller for $158, on requesting how much it would cost to ship to canada, the seller replied that it would be $21(via ups) of which i payed both costs together via paypal.
Today i get a note from ups(wasn't at home at time of delivery) stating that i have to pay $63 in import costs!
Is there anything I can do now or do I have to pay the EXORBITANT import fees by UPS?
And although i should have been aware of such costs, the seller not even remotely mentioned of such hidden costs in his item listing or via message!

  • Every country in the world has different import taxes so it's not the seller's job to list every single one. Sorry to say, but the buyer should be aware of all the taxes in their own country. Just a shame the courier was UPS as you never get away with it with them (same as DHL).

Just look on it as a lesson learned for the future.
  • so i guess there's nothing i can do in this situation..and UPS charging mot$f$in $63 for an item worth $158,(40% of the item value), is that justified??
The reason for me buying the tablet from the US was the cost itself, and even if there was import fees im pretty sure it cannot be 40% of item value.
I feel like im being looted

There will be a flat processing fee and also tax. As you imported something of relatively low value, the fee is obviously a higher percentage of the item cost than it would be for a high value item.
And as for your first question, it is entirely up to you to work out any fees that may be payable when you import goods.

This is a primarily UK board, but the responses already given are spot on, buyers are the ones who need to be aware of the import limits into their own country and bid accordingly.

Whilst I am not Canadian I do have Canadian relatives and am aware that your border/customs are one of the strictest especially where goods from the US are involved. I assumed that was common knowledge and that is why many US sellers refuse to sell to Canada as they do get complaints about how harsh the import and handling fees are.

Ebay.com do make it clear that buyers remain responsible at all times for relevant duties and taxes and a seller had no need to warn you at all.

if item has already shipped you can't change it now and a seller can use who they want and do not have to be dictated to by a buyer.

Soolin, are you aware if items listed on eBay.co.uk have similar warnings shown, if viewed from outside the EU?

No but it is in the T and Cs and sellers have protection from poor feedback and complaints if buyer raises import taxes as an excuse for non delivery or poor feedback.

There is a bit of animosity between US and Canadian ebay users as the uS sellers have a belief that Canadian users don't understand cross border importing, it is a bit of a 'National' thing. My cousins in Canada can't buy from many US sellers whereas I can!

  • There is a warning on eBay UK if you select an international postage option outside the EU but it's sort of hidden behind a question mark pop up message thingy.
