Christmas Eve food - what do you do?

Ruth_honey I loved your story! It made me smile and feel sad at the same time

On topic - there's no tradition in my house. Whatever my Mum feels like making us eat but generally it's 'if it's' which are a hangover from when I was a kid and we had no money for more food and so you eat the little bits of everything left in the freezer/fridge. My mum enforces 'if it's' on us on Christmas Eve because we're all grown up now and she's normally busy faffing around so we have to sort ourselves out. We're having a quiet Christmas this year though so who knows!!
And I will be joining my brother down the pub on Christmas Eve for the first time this year because I finally have a Christmas Eve off and I'm working so hard at the moment that I'm already looking forward to a pint of Cornish cider!0 -
Sadly my OH is working nights on christmas eve so he'll be missing out on dinner. I plan on hijacking whatever my parents are having on as I'll turn up muwhahahaTrying to save up for a deposit for a mortgage....could be a while!!
Comping since 15/06/2014 - thanks to all those who post the competitions ❤️😀0 -
Aaw I kno exactly what you mean I had a superstar Nana too. I've a few of her Christmas decorations
There isn't a day goes by without me thinking of her. Especially since I've been a Nana, I strive to be the Nana to my GDDs that she was to me (well even half would do) xxx
I'm sure you're a brilliant Nana!Last three years we've gone to the inlaws on Christmas eve for Shepards Pie & cabbage!
I put a large gammon or pork loin in the slow cooker before we go, then when we get home we have hot pork crusty rolls with loads of apple sauce.
Oooh, that sounds yummy. I love pork & apple sauce. Might make this a boxing day or new year tradition.Ruth_honey I loved your story! It made me smile and feel sad at the same time

Made me cry typing it!
Cider sounds good. Have you tried Rekordalig (sp?) cider? It's Swedish, I think. They do a winter one which you can drink warm. It's lovely!Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27

Me, DH and DD will be at my parents, with my bro and his girlfriend.
This year we're doing a potato hash with eggs and bacon for lunch, then making monkey bread for around 3pm with a cuppa. Meanwhile the cawl (welsh veggie soup) will be on the stove - DD (3yr) will have cawl around 5.30pm/6pm ish and we're having tapas type bits that my dad's making (calamari, olives, crisps, figs stuffed with chorizo). Then once DD's sorted everything for the Big Red Man's arrival and tucked up in bed, we'll have cawl with fresh crusty bread (around 8.30pm ish). Like an earlier poster, I'd prefer cheese toasties to go with the cawl but I think I'll have eaten enough rich food by then! lol
We do mulled cider - it'll probably be on the go ready for tapas! lol

Ooooo would you mind me asking how you do the pork in the slow cooker please? The most I've ever done in mine is soup or bolognaise!! Need to experiment more. And I love pork!!

My friend told me about that one the other day and we looked for it in Tesco (we were buying cider anyway that's why it came up!) but couldn't find it! Do you know where they sell it? I love Rekordalig but I never even knew about the winter one!
And yep it is Swedish. Over there you get it in cans as well as bottles and they also sell a very low alcohol/alcohol free one out there too! (Family in Stockholm).0 -

Lidl sell it for £1.99 or 3 for £5. Tesco sell the other flavours, but not seen the winter one in there yet.Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27

For about the last 17 or 18 years we have always had roast pork on Christmas Eve. We do it with loads of crackling, loads of roastie potatoes, soft rolls, stuffing and apple sauce. It all sits in the kitchen and everyone helps themselves to what they want to have. It is lovely!
My children have never known any different and for the past few years it has been even more special as it is my smallest son's birthday too - he will be four this year. He loves his special dinner!
3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!
