OMG, I didn't realise they still made these! We had one when I was little. It was a total nightmare, never ever ever again! When I was about 11 my mom stopped using it and started washing stuff in the bath instead, she told me it was broken. Lo and behold I tried it (about 3 years later - yes it was still stuck in the kitchen then:rolleyes: ) and it was fine  I think she was just trying to get my dad to buy her a front loader and it backfired :p

I have a Miele and it's never let me down yet and it's 7yrs old.

I had a separate Hoover washing machine and a spin dryer for 11 years and they were excellent. When I bought my first automatic I shoved them in the cupoard under the stairs. I lent them to a friend as her washer had broken down and never saw them again as she liked them so much .I think she had them for about ten years before they gave up the ghost. A bit more woork than an autimatic but wash day didn't take as long for the cycle, as you could choose how long you wanted to use the washer for. Brilliant for sheets ect, plus mine had a boil wash option on it. best washing machine I ever had I think as the auotomatics I have had since only seem to last about 5-7 years. mind you I only have my own washing to do now so mine should see me out

My aunty was the only person I ever knew who had one. The washing was 'rinsed' by swooshing wat er through the clothes in the spinner - not very effective really because it couldn't penetrate easily.

However, it was all so much easier than what was before. If I had to go back I would use a tub with a wringer - then rinse in the sink/bath and use a spin dryer.

No wonder we wore our clothes for longer!
  • Mum used to do the washing on a Monday starting with Whites, then going through the colours until the the darks as the water cooled. I must admit that it did wash the clothes better and I used to love the smell on a Monday. I'm only 34 BTW.

I had a twin tub when my hotpoint with a wringer on top finally died, it was brilliant for nappies, you could boil them. I used to wash nappies every second day, boil them, then half fill the washer to rinse then and spin, dried so quickly on the line.........

A normal wash day was whites, then coloureds when the water had cooled a bit, then I used to rinse stuff in the sink and sling them in the spinner.

Sheets were done the same as nappies, washed emptied the water and ran in clean water to rinse then spin.....washing took half the time it does for a single load now. My MIL had the machine when OH bought me an automatic, she was still using a dolly tub and posher............
    Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.

I had a twintub when we were first married that I inherited from my mother, I also had an old hotpoint I think it was with a wringer on the top that used to live in the cupboards just in case I the twintub broke down.

I remember pulling out steaming towels with wooden tongs to drop into the spin dryer. I always found it much better for boiling items than my automatic but to be honest I would hate to go back as wash day literally took up most of the day and used to be done on a Sunday as I could never face doing it when I came home from work in the evenings.

In the 1970s we were living in Germany as my DH was in the Army. Most of the Army families had twin-tubs,which they'd brought from the U.K. and you could buy them in the NAAFI shops, but the German shops sold only automatic ones. When my neighbour had to have hers repaired, the German engineer roared with laughter and said the machine was "obsolete"! (He did fix it though.) The washing cycle was certainly a lot quicker, and as Penny_Pincher said, the small was lovely, but I'm so glad of my automatic machine.

Thanks for bringing back memories! :D

I had one when first married and loved it - much quicker than an automatic. it sprung a leak, and my dear dad plugged it for another two years, but sadly it died in the end.
