Twin-Tub Washing Machines

I have been offered a twin tub from some-one who no longer needs it and i cant wait. I had one when i had my first two children (now age 21 and 23) and remember how brilliantly white the terry towelling nappies came out. Does any-one here own one or have owned one? I see them on ebay and wondered if they were making a bit of a come back.
sad isnt it? I am so excited to be getting one again.

I first had one when I left home some 22 years ago and it was fab and I got it secondhand. It always got the clothes really clean, the water used to get boiling hot, great for really mucky jeans and the spinner at the side got every last drop of water out. Wish I still had it.
You'll love it!!Rebel No 220 -
For all they get the clothes clean and they spin well, don't you remember the steam in the room, the standing over it, the making sure the outlet pipe didn't come out of the sink....etc etc
I was given my first one but I'm glad for my automatic now - I can put the washing in and leave it for hours if need be afterit's finished. I don't think I'd be glad to go back to a twin-tub. Mind you, I didn't have mucky kids then - it was bad enough washing for 2 adults.0 -
I use one - much better for low-temperature washing (so little or no steam) and stuff comes out nearly dry from the spinner. Never goes wrong, probably because it's clockwork not computer...0

There was a twin tub in the SnowyOwl nest back when I was a little fluffy owlet. I remember flooding the kitchen because I tottered off and forgot about putting the hose into the sink. Mother was not best pleased. The twin tub got replaced by an automatic at some point. There have been no wails of regrets from the users. Think the twin tub is a bit of a faff compared to an automatic. But that's just a personal opinion. If you want one...get one!0

We had one that came with a cottage we rented about 5 years back. It was great but I found I had to be very disciplined as it was only worth getting out when there was enough washing to run 4/5 loads at a time really. I can't say I'm not thrilled that we now have an automatic but it was very useful at the time and certainly better than having no machine at all.0

My dad still uses his, he will not by an automatic. Must admit they do come out really dry from the spinner. I have been round when the pipe has come out the sink and flooded the kitchen a few times!!!0

I used to have one until it went to the laundry room in the sky. It washed well and had a fab spin on it. I must admit to not liking tumbling type machines that take 2 hours to wash clothes in an egg cup full of water. I always favour the agitator type machines that turn a wash round in 10 mins. I've used a super sized 10k american machine for two years now and find the auto rinsing and spinning much better than standing over a twin-tub even if it does use gallons and gallons of water. I used to often re-spin in the twin-tub tho to reduce my TD bills as america thinks 600 rpm is a fast spin:rotfl: .Life's a beach! I bought mine from ebay-its one of the new generation plastic bodied models.
I can do a load in under 5 minutes, compared to the "quick wash, economy, light soil" setting on my automatic which took 30+ minutes and left the clothes still wet.
Between using less powder,& much less hot water & electricity, it saves me a fortune.
I used to have my automatic running all day, every day just to keep up with my four little muck-magnets-now it takes less than an hour to have lovely empty wash baskets0 -
Thanks for all the replies and opinions. I hope to collect the twin tub tomorrow. I will be still be keeping my automatic washing machine plumbed in and intend on using the twin tub once or twice a week . Luckily i have a big enough kitchen. With a family my size i cant afford to be without a washing machine and at least this way i should always have a back up when one or the other breaks down. I will let you know how i find the twin tub as i may have a nostalgic view of this machine,“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. I looked at these the other week when my automatic broke down, What are these like? Are they heavy to move a few feet to the sink?Is yours digital?“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. Your really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” Lucille Ball.0
