Twin-Tub Washing Machines

Does anyone know if its still possible to buy a 'twin-tub' washing machine ? I have found one but its more expensive than a front loader! The reason i am asking is, i seem to only be getting an average of 12-14 months before my washing machine breaks down (always just after the guarantee is up !!) So was thinking maybe a twin-tub would be a better option ? Oh and limited budget.0

I've just googled and found a twin tub for £299 from Mobility Direct.0

Perhaps you could get a more reliable make of automatic? I have a bosch one and its great, and had one great hoover but after that I had two in three years!!! they were awful
Twin tubs are so much hard work - and can be messy, heavy work and are definately not cheaper to use or buy. I would never go back to one now - ever and I know many older people will agree with me. You dont realise until you get one how much easier and lighter washing is when your automatic washer does it for you.
automatics get more water out and dont spoil your clothes like twin tubs do ( they can ruin your clothes because the action is harsher) and all that filling and emptying with hoses over sinks, hauling wet clothes from washer to spinner, pulling out the machine and putting it back etc
never again lol

Hi Kickstart,
Have you ever used a twin tub? It makes washing long and laborious, is tougher on clothes, and you need a lot more space to put it.
It was my job to do all the washing with a twin tub on a Saturday when I lived at home years ago!! It's so easy just to bung clothes in an automatic, rahter than drag out the twin tub, fill it up, then the whole process of washing, spinning, rinsing, spinning!! Do think carefully before purchasing one.

Have you considered a top loading drum model such as a Whirlpool AWE 6515 or a Zanussi TLE1116. I am on my second Whirlpool since 1975. The drums have two bearings they are only 40 cm wide and just keep on going and going...

When I was younger my mum had a twin tub and tbh it did look like a lot of hassle. Mind you it was better than what she had before - she had to either go to the launderette or wash clothes in the bath if there wasn't enough money to go to the launderette. I doubt she would go back to a twin tub. I also remember her using a mangle.0

I'm also old enough to remember my mum with a twin tub and spending all day Monday washing. My mum always seemed to be standing over the twin tub, rather than going and doing something else like you do with an automatic, no idea why she did it or even if she had to as never used one myself. Are you doing a lot more washing than average. My mum is a hairdresser and always got thru WMs at a fantastic rate.
What about paying for an extended warranty on your next machine.0 -
Thanks looked at all your comments , no big deal using a twin-tub (yes used one before) only me , no large family. Just fed up with washers breaking down on me , its like i am jinxed! Tried different models , various prices ,same result. By comparison my mum has the same washer as my latest one , hers has lasted 4 yrs up to now , mine 14 mths !0

I also have used a twin tub and can't believe you'd even consider it, tho maybe you've more patience than me
Apparently regularly using spin speeds above 1000 can have a bad effect on your machine - do you do this often?
Otherwise according to Which magazine, bosch and miele are the most reliable makes. I pushed the boat out and went for miele since I don't intend to ever replace it if at all possibleand it's still going very well. Bosch is a lot cheaper tho and performed nearly as well in terms of reliability...
