Saving money on dog food....

Thanks so much for all the replies, I will definitely look into some of those! One thing I have tried to do is keep him on a food where the first ingredient is meat (I read somewhere that healthwise this is a big thing to look for!)
I think recommended amounts is difficult for me to look at until we trial a food as he is a young, very active dog and therefore needs more food than average. We aim for 90mins out with him a day, most of which he is running around like a lunatic after his ball!
Thanks again to everyone who has replied!Kitchen Debt - 2820/260Save £12k in 2013 #060: 1293.24/3000MFW: 88760.00/85000.00 (4.24% paid)0 -
we feed our 3 springers on Skinners Duck and rice and they all look great and are never ill.
We order via Amazon using the subscribe option which works out at £20.69 for 15kg inc delivery. great service as I have it set up to reorder every 3 weeks so I never run out or forget and its the cheapest place to get it from.0 -

I feed my Staffie who has skin allergys on Skinners Duck and Rice as its hypoallegenic and have noticed a big improvment in her skin since shes been on it. Its a very good quality food for the price. I have tried more expensive foods and she didnt do as well on them. I wouldnt touch the cheeper skinners foods though.

Totally agree - for Skinners, it's got to be Duck & Rice, Turkey & Rice or Salmon & Rice
I will set up the Amazon re order thing next time I need a bag - I didn't realise you could change the frequencies (don't quite fit in with how much I use) so that's great & thanks to BECKIN1507 for that info:TGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I used to feed Arden grange and swaped to skinners 12 months ago. This summer my girls skin was better than its ever been, and for the first time she didnt need piriton every day when the pollen count was high0 -
get the dog on WORKING DOG food ASAP, as you don't pay VAT on it. I think it's another one of those hangovers from the war - like red diesel for tractors has no duty on it - I think.
I currently pay £10.99/15kg for Country Valu Greyhound/Country Valu Beef/ Country Valu Chicken and Dr John's Silver with chicken at my local pet supplier. although I can now see that Pets at home are charging less than £10/15kg fopr country valu beef/chicken so guess where I'm going next time!
These are all Working dog foods (kibble type) with 18% protein that I feed my two Greyhounds (anything higher and they go schitzo).
You don't have to prove they are working dogs either as my local pet supplier just sells it to anyone that wants to buy it.
Seriously, I couldn't believe it that working dog food is WAY cheaper than other dog food but it's exactly the same stuff just not in a fancy bag.just in case you need to know:

The Skinners ones mentioned above are VAT free
You're very lucky if you can feed your dogs the above but I'm afraid they're not suitable for dogs that have sensitive tummies (as the OP mentioned in their first post) due to the high level of cereals in them.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I think we are going to give Skinners a go, although we will have to gradually introduce it as a sudden change might result in some seriously bad bowel movements (sorry!). The only think that I have reservations is that rice is the main ingredient rather than meat....although I'm not sure how important this is, it's just something I read once that seems to have stuck!Kitchen Debt - 2820/260Save £12k in 2013 #060: 1293.24/3000MFW: 88760.00/85000.00 (4.24% paid)0

I wouldnt feed the cheep pets at home foods or the Dr Johns. They are full of cereals and have a low meat content. And are both scored less than 1 out of 5 on whichdogfood.co.uk compared to skinners thats 3.6 out of 5.
Also the cheeper foods arnt always that much cheeper as you have to feed more to your dog. For example a 15-20kg the pets at home valu you would need to feed 331g a day costing 21p a day the Skinners duck and rice would be 226g a day working out at around 35p a day and of course the less you put in the less that comes out

I believe that rice is easly digestible to dogs, where as most cereals are not. I do sometimes add left over meat or tinned fish to the skinners and give my girl the odd bone from the butchers
