Saving money on dog food....

We have a large cross breed dog (approx 31kg). He is young (2) and very active and we currently get through around 20kg of dry food a month. We are currently feeding him on Pets at Home advanced nutrition which he gets on really well with. He seems to have a bit of a sensitive stomach as we have used cheaper foods before and had multiple episodes of D and V. His current food costs £33 for 12kg so just wondering if any of you could recommend a cheaper, good quality food?
I realise he eats more than recommended for his size but you can feel his ribs still and he has only put on 1-2kg since we rescued him 6 months ago (and that needed to go on!)
Any advice appreciated.

I know by dad used to feed his dogs (bearded collies) tripe, you could try something like this, (sorry don't know the prices)

Have you looked at the Skinners Field & Trial ones note Duck & Rice, Salmon & Rice and Turkey & Rice varieties only are the hypoallergenic ones
I've linked to the Duck & Rice but you can get to the other 2 from their to look at the ingredients http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/products/field---trial-products/duck---rice/
The Duck is the cheapest - you can get it for around £23 online, with the Salmon being around £27 with the Turkey slightly pricier at around £30 - all 15kg
We've now fed 3 dogs on this - none have needed as much as the recommended feeding amounts which may be good for your lad!
Do you add anything else to his food? - You could bulk out with some veg and rice.
A good quality wet added such as Nature Diet or Wainwrights trays may help and you'd find you need to feed less kibble if you do this too.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

This stuff is supposed to be good http://www.vitalinpetfood.co.uk/mall/departmentpage.cfm/VitalinCompletePetFood/_283513/1/Life%2520Stage%2520Range
Slightly more expensive than Skinners tho' (which will partly be down to the VAT difference)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I feed Zara Skinners (salmon).
Zara is 49kg and a 15kg bag of skinners lasts her 43 days.
At £25.92 per a 15kg bag ( http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-food-skinners-dog-food-c-1024_420/skinners-field-and-trial-salmon-rice-dog-food-15kg-p-2433) that translates to about 60 pence per day so around £18.00 per month.0 -

GR do you pay delivery on that?
Cheapest I've found for the Salmon was on Ama*zon and it was £26.99 (delivered) - but it does drop to £24.29 if you do it on a repeat order basis (not done yet as want to make sure it agreed with her 100% - touch wood so far everything is good!:T).Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

@RFTA. £2 unless you spend £29 (so order 2 at a time).
@OP. We tried the Skinners Field & Trial Salmon & Duck varieties, but they didn't agree with our girls. Strangely, the Skinners Lamb is what we landed on with one (AG Lamb with the other). Currently £28.66 @ Petmeds (10% off second bag if ordering 2, 10% off everything if you open a new account).0 -
As above, I normally order 2 at a time so do not pay for delivery.
Amazon price for regular deliveries is good but I order at various times of the month as can never calculate exactly how much goes/has to come with my money being ermm available too.. so order few bags from VetUk as and when needed.0 -
Ok, I know I keep saying it...but CSJ Complete dog food is brilliant. I switched my dogs to it a while ago after tummy troubles on Hills Science Plan. The CSJ food keeps the dogs in fabulous condition too.
The variety I use is called That'll Do! which apparently is a term farmers use to their sheepdogs.
Anyway it costs £30 for two 15kg bags delivered. That's £1 a kilo.
If you go to the CSJ website they will send you some good sized samples so you can make sure your dog will like the food. Mine love it.0 -

That's a great price - is it Hypoallergenic?

Lots of CSJ's range is high in cereals. Fine for many dogs but may not be the best for those with allergies or intolerances.
Not slating the food - it's a good quality food for the budget its in and the company have a reputation of being very helpful, but with a lower price there are lower budget ingredients in it. I'd feed/recommend it over Pedigree and the like but would either go for a different food or something else in their range (e.g. they do a lamb & rice that's wheat-gluten free) for a dog with allergies/intolerances.
"That'll Do" is
Composition
Chicken Meal, Wheat, Maize, Chicken Fat, Chicken Liver, Rice, Unmolassed Beet Pulp, Wheatfeed, Prairie Meal, Alfalfa, Oats, Salmon Oil, Yeast, Yucca Schidigera0
