changing gas and electric companies, When can I do it?

hi. My contract ends with the company I use to supply my gas and electri ends on the 31st december. Am I allowed to sign up yo a different supplier now or do I need to wait until the end before I find a new supplier. Ive been told it takes up to 6 weeks to change which will take me past the contract date so will be ok to sign up now?
