Jonny Foreigner is the new BOE Governor

Mark Carney has been named as the new governor of the Bank of England by Chancellor George Osborne.

Mr Carney, the governor of the Canadian central bank, will serve for five years and will hold new regulatory powers over banks.

He was a surprise choice for the head of the UK's central bank and had previously ruled himself out.

Not a great vote of confidence in British economists, and a bit of a kick in the teeth for Merv given that he gets a significantly bigger salary package.

  • Excellent that they have not picked someone from the British establishment.

It doesn't matter in the slightest, but I'm not sure that a Goldman Sachs background makes him the best person for the job.

He appears to have been given the job because Gideon is a big fan of the Canadian economy, but of course before that he was a big fan of the Irish tiger economy.

That's a broad generalisation towards all current and ex employees of Goldman Sachs. I would suggest rather unfairly.

Mark's wife Di is a Britsh trained economist so the real power will be native born.

Maybe a Goldman Sachs type would make a good poacher turned gamekeeper.

    He did study at Oxford.

I think he would only really qualify for the title "Johnny Foreigner" if he was French Canadian.

it is reported that Mark worked with Goldman Sachs advising Russian on it's Financial crisis in the 90s; that was while Goldman was betting that Russia wouldn't be able to pay it's debts.
Mark wouldn't have known about that of course...

Quite right, Canadians (even French-speaking ones) are not foreign, they are Commonwealth -- old, white, Commonwealth (that latter description of course flies in the face of political correctness like being a UKIP signed-up foster parent in Rotherham).

Going to Oxford doesn't necessarily mean establishment, it's what they do afterwards, and how they do it, that determines that.
