Mark Carney has been named as the new governor of the Bank of England by Chancellor George Osborne.
Mr Carney, the governor of the Canadian central bank, will serve for five years and will hold new regulatory powers over banks.
He was a surprise choice for the head of the UK's central bank and had previously ruled himself out.

Not a great vote of confidence in British economists, and a bit of a kick in the teeth for Merv given that he gets a significantly bigger salary package.

Excellent that they have not picked someone from the British establishment.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

It doesn't matter in the slightest, but I'm not sure that a Goldman Sachs background makes him the best person for the job.

That's a broad generalisation towards all current and ex employees of Goldman Sachs. I would suggest rather unfairly.0 -

it is reported that Mark worked with Goldman Sachs advising Russian on it's Financial crisis in the 90s; that was while Goldman was betting that Russia wouldn't be able to pay it's debts.

Quite right, Canadians (even French-speaking ones) are not foreign, they are Commonwealth -- old, white, Commonwealth (that latter description of course flies in the face of political correctness like being a UKIP signed-up foster parent in Rotherham).
