I agree, nematodes are the way to go. It doesn't harm wildlife and certainly works. I just nematoded (if that's a word!) my allotment the other day.
I also use slug pellets around leafy crops but I use these ones: Growing Success Advanced Slug Killer which are made from iron and certified as organic. They are not nasty like the Metaldehyde ones and really do a fantastic job. These coupled with the nematodes, the slugs stand no chance!
Edit: Lots of B & Q now stock Growing Success.0 -
I had this problem last year (so I thought!) as all my seedling plans that I put out to harden off were being decimated, then I found out...... not slugs...but........rabbits!! Even worse. So this year I am being oh so cautious about where I am putting plants.DTD - Doing Tesco Daily - while I still have vouchers!0

Have you tried companion planting? Rabbits don't like onioney smelling plants so some spring onions would do the trick. Even if they are flowers you are growing, it will still look nice!0

We have a few fruit trees and have recently planted some soft fruit bushes, a small orchard actually, so the tips on rabbits are very welcome. About the slugs, if you happen to see any wandering around try putting them into your compost heap with some cardboard too, just to help it along... I read somewhere they aid in the compost development by breaking down "brown" waste.
Cheers

Can anyone please give me some advice about dealing with slugs on vegetable patches? Has anyone tried a perimeter defence using crushed eggshells? I've heard that a barrier made of copper is effective too, is this true?

I was told to half bury a jam jar or similar in the ground near the problem and put some beer in.
I used an old bowl half buried in the bottom of my 4 tiered greenhouse frame thingy and i put some t*sco value bitter in it. Caught 3 of the !!!!!!s on the first night. Result.I like to save the money...0 -
My neighbour eats loads of oysters and he crushes the shells and scatters them on the soil. The slugs keep away as they cut themselves if they try to slime onto his vegetables! Our dream has come true...0
