We're not doing that much over the xmas period either. I'm only doing presents for my parents and gran, and they are only token gifts. Oh and a little something for my hubby but only because my dad bought it without me knowing.
Think we are doing the normal christmas lunch at my mum's but that's all that maters to me.
No decorations this year either. I can't be doing with it.
I may be saying things out of term, but I feel modern chrismas' are for those that have children. I've had enough of adverts on tv shoving it down my throat that the only way to have a good xmas is to buy loads of stuff for your children and see the happy looks on their faces.
Not trying to be arguementative, it's just my thoughts.

Traditionally, where I grew up, it was the ideal to be out of debt by the old year's end so as to start the New Year with a clean slate. I've just done that.

I've not heard that one. Where we were, it was always the house that had to be cleaned to get rid of every speck of dirt to start the new year clean.

I did that for years, cleaning like a looney right up until NY eve. It was ridiculously stressful, it wasn't just a whip round with a duster, curtains had to come down and be washed, cupboards cleaned out etc etc.

I'm now happy to be much more sloth like. I'm sure the dust of 2012 will not affect 2013 in the slightest. :rotfl:

I was always told it was the house that had to be clean too. This year I am giving the house a really good clean and tidy before putting the Xmas decorations up. Then I am not overly worrying about it all again till they come down. A quick dust and wipe over will do fine. With two happy, crazy little kids in the house running amok with all their new toys and things, time can be better spent playing than cleaning. They are little for such a short amount of time and I dont want to miss a minute of all the fun and chaos.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

This was because we're old enough to get the married people's tax allowance, one of the couple has to have been born before April 1935 and DH was. We split it between us, but last year HMRC didn't do that so I ended up paying too much.

Originally, it was given to married men because 'they had a wife to keep'!!!

I cannot get excited about Christmas this year (not that I ever do, particularly, but this year seems to have nothing going for it).

If I can't book a trip away I shall take inspiration from margaretclare and complete my SA - will save me a job in January I suppose.

  • Actually wish I could work all the way through it .... I hate it .....:(

I end up wishing most of December away and just want to hibernate until it's all over and it's January.

I hate all the commercialism and people seem to think it's only Christmas if you spend stupid amounts of money on expensive gifts that will just get minimal use.

My Mom has told me not to worry about getting her and my Dad anything this year, as we haven't got much money. But it makes me feel guilty as she always spends a ridiculous amount on me, DH and our 2 girls.

I really am not bothered about going over the top with dinner too. I like it just the same as a Sunday roast, but my Mom likes to go over the top (they are coming to us this year). My Mom and Dad were going to go out for dinner, but it's £40 per person  That's another thing that annoys me, we have only been out for Christmas dinner once and that was the last time, long waiting time for food, then it was cold, staff don't want to be there (who wants to work on Christmas day?).

My Mom was going to get all veg, but I've said we will get it. Although we have fresh veg, we use the prepared stuff which is nice and it means we are not slaving away in the kitchen all day. The brocolli and carrots will be the prepared ones and we will have frozen button sprouts. My Mom wanted the "fresh" brussell ones in the netting, but nobody else eats them and it would be a waste.

  • I have happily ignored Christmas for several years. It doesn't mean anything to me, and I've better things to do with what little spare cash I have. I don´t send cards, only buy a small gift for one close friend, don't eat anything special, just have a quiet, relaxed, stress-free day.
  • I work in retail and beleive me if i had a penny for every customer so far that has said they hate this time of year, all hype, waste of money etc ide be a millionaire. Im single and is just another day for me, i wil have decorations up for myself but as for lots of food, drink, i dont eat a lot anyway. Ive been offered dinner by several friends, but to be honest ide rather stay at home have dinner then visit family. They all think this is sad staying home alone for dinner. Ive had a few bad christmases with an ex and believe me staying at home for the first time last year was heaven.
