Hallelujah!
*cue lots of happy clappy choir people yelling 'oh yeah', 'hallelujah' and other such supportive and agreeing comments.* :T
Oh.
Is that just in my head then? :rotfl:
Well that's how I feel anyway.

We have no kids and stopped giving to neices/nephews once they were 16, but still gave to parents and siblings. We also visited for a family get together which neither of us enjoyed as we do not really get on with our siblings. My brother remarried, his wife having young kids, so bought for them for the first three years, but they did not even acknowledge the gifts, nevermind thank us. I also became aware that the gifts we were receiving from our siblings had no thought put into them and ended up just being put in a drawer. That coupled with being sick of the commercialisation (chrismas stuff in the shops in September!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), meant that last year we decided to give up.
We asked for no presents, and sent none, except for a small token for parents. We did not visit, had no decorations, and just enjoyed a nice meal together and went out for a lovely walk with our dogs, watched no telly, and you know what? It was one of the best christmases I have had. We are doing the same this year!

I love Christmas for the break from work. Not for much else though.
It's me and himself and my mum, or just the two of us when mum goes to another sibling. We rotate mum around between the siblings each Xmas and she loves that!
I have two sis and a bro and we see each other all year round regularly. So we don't see the need for a stupid get together when no on can have a flippin drink, and those without kids are bored to death with the noise of the brats!
We don't buy for each other. That's daft, here's your pressie, oh thanks, and here's yours, oh thanks...200quid down the drain. Instead we have a weekend break either just before or just after Christmas. Most enjoyable and better than a stupid pressie.
We only buy for mum and my two nephews under 21, and my grandniece who is two. All others over 21...sayonara!
The siblings agreed years ago not to buy for each other, and we told the nieces and nephews that pressies until 21.
Everyone is delighted.
We see each other all the time, so for me it's no big deal to have a simple Christmas. We all have our own Christmas in our respective houses. But we flit about to each other on Xmas Eve. That's it.
Whatever floats yr boat!0 -
As we don't have any little ones here at home we don't tend to make much of Xmas and this year I am going to be volunteering to do first aid every night (barring my birthday on 22nd) from 21 Dec on the Maidstone Urban Blue Bus so I am going to be looking for a good rest on Xmas day! We will have a late breakfast/lunch about 11am as I won't be home until 4am or so) and then a nice dinner about 3.30pm. A visit to the in-laws on Xmas evening and then Boxing Day = football and a cold cut dinner when we get home.
I've been saving Tesco stamps, have a huge bottle half filled with 20, 10, 5, 2 & 1p coins and a Tesco giftcard with £30 on which I got when I got the dog insured with them so the food and drink shopping is well taken care of.
I spend about £30 on 23 yr old son at home, husband and brother, we've agreed not to buy for my adult step-son and daughter and their OHs and will give the Grandsons money with a little pressy to unwrap. I am making some peppermint creams so will give some of those to family.0 -
I had one extreme year in 2008 when we were in desperate straits but the sad look on everyone's faces really upset me. This year I am cutting back as my husband has just been laid off again and no hope of work this side of Christmas.
However, I am still going to cook turkey on Christmas Day and buy small presents as I have saved up for Christmas over the year. I saved £50 a month but I don't think I am going to spend £600. They are not the only savings we have so we are in a relatively good position but I want to keep it like that. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I like the idea of not doing a Christmas lunch . I'm not that bothered for turkey but think I have to cook it as Dh and his mam (86) will be here also DS and girlfriend + they want turkey etc. We'll see 2 grandkids Christmas day + 2 boxing day and that'll be a really nice part when they open their presents . I understand why some people don't bother for various reasons . It's not a happy time for lots of people . Lots of stress for one day and expecting it to be perfect as shown on tv, where there's no hassle at all !0

My daughter and I are going Christmas shopping as we usually do but I won't have a lot to buy and I have to factor into my budget a family trip to see the Hobbit and a lunch at Jamie's on Christmas shopping day. I find these treats more fun than presents tbh.
I love cooking Christmas lunch though, and having the family round the table. I do like Christmas and my husband really likes it too, its normally his only break of the year but not this year. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
Just saw on the news someone paid £1600 for 4 tickets to the Rolling Stones concert. That would pay for most people to have a wonderful Christmas. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

We went to Egypt last year for christmas, the decorations were there but it was like any other normal day bit weird sunbathing on christmas day. Doesn't feel like we've had a christmas for ages.

I have some issues with Xmas (had a couple of traumatic Christmases in the past) and its not been same since. Hubby tho loves Xmas, so I make an effort for his sake.
I'm working Xmas eve, xmas day, boxing day, then every day till after new year, so its not going to be a traditional xmas at all!0
