I think it is a little unfair of your OH to expect you to live on such a little amount when he has loads more. However, if you are likely to be earning more than him (even if it is 6 months away), are you prepared to go pro rata with him? It's a toughie.

Me and bf have been together for almost 8 years and I get paid (slightly) more than him. We stick all our wages into a joint account and then get £400 pocket money each from this to do what we want with. I think if I was earning loads more, I might be a bit annoyed, but I just try to keep in mind that when we have kids and I have no money, I will still have the same amount of "pocket money" as him albeit from his wages!

i seriously doubt i'll be earning more than him for a while anyway as the starting salary for teachers is 21,000 p/a and there's no jobs round here and i don't drive (yet!) I've never been v good thinking about my career options!!

Thanks pudding-if i do get supply work that wont be until sept so that's 6 months away!

I thought you had to do a year as an "NQT" (Newly Qualified Teacher) before you became a "fully qualified" teachers and could then do supply? I could be wrong, but I'm sure this was the case with Mrs Dither when she passed her PCGE many moons ago.

As far as sharing the cash is concerned, it seems a bit unfair to expect the boyfriend to shoulder a greater burden financially just because he earns more. As a man, he will have more outgoings because he will need to purchase motorbike, car & girly magazines, drink in rounds with his mates, buy knackered cars to do up, etc. Women just don't understand the damands on the modern male that today's society has!

I don't see why he should have to pay more either. I've lived with someone earning less and someone paying more and I though it only fair that everything was split down the middle. If that's what was agreed at the time I can't see how you can ask him to change it now.

  • I earn just over 3x the amount my other half earns (I have 3x the debts too, though), and we split it more pro-rata than anything... he was not happy that we WEREN'T splitting it down the middle, so we settled on about 2/3 me, 1/3 him (he didn't feel this fair on me, go figure).
My justification for this at the time was that if he had no money at the end of the month, we could live with a week of lean. If he had no money at the start of the month, we'd both end up miserable.
I don't know what the differences are in opinion between guys and girls on this one though, if any (not having a girl in either of our lives!)...

this may be the case i'll have to look into it-i'm kind of burrying my head in the sand about applying for jobs i feel panicky thinking about it!!

    It's a difficult one isn't it? Maybe i should do a poll-who pays their bills pro-rata?

I earn 30x what Mrs. Dither earns and so I give her a monthly stipend for her and the kids live on while I finance my champagne lifestyle of fast cars and fast women.

I'm not recommending it for everyone, but it seems to work for us, so it might be worth giving it a try?
