I'm a student at mo & don't work but getting 666/mth grant (PGCE)
I have about 15 thou of student loan debt which i dont have to pay back yet and o/d of 1500 which is interest free.
We both pay 400/m into joint account (OH earns 1,210/m approx plus occasional o/t & occasional bonus)

We pay half each for the shopping every week which is about 20 quid each (know this can be cut back but we like our booze!!)
Our accounts are totally seperate what's his is his what pittance i get is mine!!
my mob costs are negiable (about 50 quid last yr)
Pay HSA 12/m for dentist fees.
All help much appreciated

You seem to have everything pretty low although I think it would be fairer if you paid the bills pro rate, e.g OH paid £500 you paid £300, I'm sure he'd want to do that if it was the other way round!0

yeah that's a bit of a bone of contention w/ me. When we first moved in together nearly 6 yrs ago 1 was on 10 grand a yr (temp job as just finished uni) and he was on about 16 grand i think and i said that we should pay the bills pro rata. However, his best mate maintained that why should my OH be penalised for earning more than me? mmmm We've just kinda gone a long w/ that and i gave up work and started the PGCe and its just gone on like that. Thing is he is soooo bad w/ money that he ran out on the 13th of this month and ive had to sub him!!
So how do you think i should broach it with him that i should be paying less each month-how do i make him see that it's only fair0 -
Also we don't have any mortgage protection we were offered it when we bought the house nearly 5 yrs ago free for 6mnths we said yes and cancelled it after 6 mnths thinking that i'll get it cheaper elsewhere but never got round to it-do we need it?
Should i pay off the o/d w/ our savings (we have about 72 quid in yorkshire building soc) bearing in mind that we don't have any other savings as i back up?0 -
cocalls,
before you broach the subject of pro-rata with your OH- remember its now april and you'll qualify in june/july. as soon as you qualify you should be eligible to do supply work and if you have a job to go to you will be earning more than him anyway!!! remember it only takes 6 years to get to the top of the scale too.
I think he'll realise how unfair things have been for you then and it will make him listen less to his mates and listen to you more of he finds the shoe on the other foot so to speak.
why are you paying hsa for your dental treatment? are there only opriveate dentists in your area. I thought that but easily got a new one here( for the six of us) when ours went private. Recent treatment came to £189 - extensive treatment when son got all his front teeth broken on a night out. This would be the most you would pay ( although its gone up slightly recently to £195 I think) most other treatment is very cheap.
puddsAugust 2009 grocery challenge £172.64/,,,,,
no point in doing grocery challenges, have no money left over to eat :0/0 -
Thanks pudding-if i do get supply work that wont be until sept so that's 6 months away!
I only just joined w/ HSA as i havent been to the dentist for 3 1/2 yrs there are no NHS dentists in York accepting new paitients (Last time i went i was with a NHS dentist but they chucked me off saying they're going private!!)
I get 35 quid cashback w/ quidco and ive already had to have a tooth removed and a filling so ive claimed back more than i will spend in the next yr)
Let that be a lesson to all go to the dentists regulary its not money saving not to go!!0 -
With your OH, I would say that in a serious relationship (which it obviously is as you've got a joint mortgage) he should be paying more at the moment while you're a student. Having said that, what other costs do you each have per month? You have £266 left and he has £700 left, and if he's running out halfway through the month I'm wondering what he spends this on - does he have high transport costs, debts that he's trying to pay off etc?Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

Cocalls - have you joined the York PCT dentist waiting list? OH and I joined and got added to the books of a dentist in York 6 months later. I think you go on their website and sign up (or ring a dentist and ask how to do it) and we just got a phone call out the blue one day saying there was a practice with spaces. Really good system - much better than trying to call your local dentist all the time as when they get a space they let the people at the top of the list know and they get offered the space.Initial Mortgage January 2024 - £160,000

luckily he has no debts apart from about a 500 o/d whcih he regulary goes over (i got him back a couple of grand in charges last yr for a 10 % fee of course! as he wasn't going to do anything about it and i had to sort out all the paper work)
He is truly terrible w/ money i really dont know what he spends it on apart from he likes art work we have some lovely pieces dotted around but they're only a couple of hundred and he gets them at 0 %
We have car but the insurance is about 33 quid which he pays for as i can't drive & petrol is about a tenner every few weeks which we both chip in for as we cycle everywhere.0 -

We signed up online when it was launched - it was in the local press quite a bit then. The number for dental enquiries for York PCT is 01904 724107 if you phoned them they'd be able to tell you more about it and add you on the list I presume.Initial Mortgage January 2024 - £160,000
