New owners wont hand over post!

Not sure if I have posted this on the right forum but hope someone can help.

I sold my house and moved out just over three weeks ago. I placed a redirection on my post but this took a week to take place. In the meantime I know post has gone to my old address. On completion day I asked the new owners if they could pass any post to my neighbour and they agreed. After a couple of days nothing had happened so I called round to collect post. They were in but didnt answer the door. So I left a note. Still nothing. My ex called round and left a note. Last week I left a letter with my contact details so they could let me know a suitable time to call, my ex has done the same still nothing.

Want to know where we stand and what can we do. I know for sure some important documents ie. my daughters exam certs have gone there and desperately want them. Any advice?

Not sure there's anything you can do to make them hand it over. My guess is they've binned it and are too embarrassed to admit it.

I suppose you could ask your former neighbour to ask them when he/she sees them coming out of their house.

Unfortunately the Royal Mail only delivers to addresses not to named people. Therefore they (RM) won't be interested.

I couldn't possibly comment on why the thought crossed my mind;) - but have you done something to upset your buyer (eg taken something that should have been left in the house or not mentioned some major/expensive work that urgently needed doing or something) and they have held onto the post until you "put matters right" or at least to give them some sort of satisfaction that they havent just "rolled over and taken it". If that is the case, then "putting matters right" might miraculously mean the post got found.

    Ahem...cough....;)

If you've been a Perfect Vendor in all respects then I'm way offtrack on that and wouldn't have any idea why they have held onto the post and it may be that the post never actually arrived at the house (courtesy of Post Office inefficiency) - in which case your gripe is with the Post Office for not doing their job properly.

All you can do is ask nicely.

But - your daughters exam certificates were due and you didn't set up the redirection in advance? Crazy...
  • Write them a nice, calm & polite letter asking how they are getting on, if there is anything you can do to help & is there anything they'd like to pass on mail.

Yup, they sound p####'d off but maybe some family crisis is taking all their time & attention.

    Cheers!
  • Maybe they're on holiday, or not fully moved in yet?

You can always get reissues of exam certificates for a small fee.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
  • They may have gone away, or simply been very busy sorting out the new place. I know when we bought our place, we didn't immediately move in and then when we did we were very busy putting in new carpets, paint, new kitchen and bathroom. The vendor's mail may be the last thing on their minds.

The estate agent is across the road from us so we have been giving them the post (as requested by the vendor) but I think we may tell them we are stopping soon as we bought the place in August!

I think if there is anything you want urgently, you will have to pay for a reissue (e.g. the exam certs) otherwise there's not much you can do but wait. Next time you move, set up the redirection in advance, although I know that doesn't help you now.
  • You have been round four times in three weeks and left four notes/letters.

I would suggest you leave them alone in their new home, accept your mistake, and accept any lost post and get anything reissued which you can.

If they pass it on to the neighbours in their own time, bonus. If not, theres nothing you can do. I think you have gone overboard with your visits to their new home and they are probably pee'd off now. If they havent passed it on now I dont think further visits/letters/notes are going to help.

Err not the case! Exam boards won't issue replacement certificates unless something catastrophic has happened like the house has burned down but even then you have to back that up with fire brigade reports, insurance reports etc.

If they are 'lost' (i.e. any other scenario than the house burning down pretty much) they essentially issue a copy of the exam grade statement and charge you something in the region of £45 a throw.
