The British Banking system doesn't use names so you can put anything and the bank won't confirm or deny it.

That's why paypal require verification and can request scanned information as well.

    How often does that happen?

I know they used to do the two deposits and now do the 1p into the account.

When you do a full verification or when anything happens that is slightly out of the usual on your accountt. I have had to upload scanned ID twice now to keep my full verification and to link my ebay and paypal accounts.

I am usually the first to defend paypal- but I am happy to say I never leave anything more than a few pounds in there . In fact I would happily clear it twice a day on 'Good' days rather than even wait until after close of business.

I have been known to be at a cash machine at 11:59pm withdrawing money - then again at 00.01 - so 2 lots in one visit = £480 safely in my pocket.

We are not paranoid- we just don't trust organisations!

Because they want to know exactly who is using their service.

But they have no way of knowing, if you have mis-matching names.

Your two statements contradict each other

Different details are needed for making a bank transfer compared with what is needed paying with a card. Bank transfer details only allow someone to pay money into an account but credit or debit card details allow someone to remove money so is much more risky.

For a card payment with the customer not present more information is needed. Accounts can be set up differently, but they can check names, card numbers and expiry dates, CV2 numbers and registered addresses, declining transactions if details don't match,
