But I don't want a Sherbet Dab.......

  • I think I've finally decided that this is the last year I am exchanging gifts with anyone other than DH, stepchildren, parents and sister. I read Martin's article on them and prioritising etc and it just doesn't seem worth it anymore.
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.
  • Poor OP! I feel for you!

For the very same sort of reason, I "encouraged" the stopping of gift giving with the adults in the family who have children. We now buy for the children, and for those with no children, we buy for them off our children, as we want them to understand giving AND receiving. They buy for our children, but not us.
This suits me down to the ground - one year I gave my sister-in-law a pair of Accessorize pj's (bought in the sale, but right size, and lovely!); I received a horrendous metal wine bottle holder shaped to look like a cat... I was 7 months pregnant. It strangely got lost when we moved.
I could go on.... I'm not ungrateful, but would rather people didn't waste their money.

Our family only bought for the children but even that has stopped now as we are effectively moving cash from one family to another.
I try to drop hints about what I like in the run up to Christmas and birthdays, making sure they are all cheap gifts that the kids can afford.
I did express a penchant for Ferrero Rocher one year and I have been getting them ever since......I can't bring myself to eat another one now!!

Has anyone seen the range of Heinz gifts in BHS http://www.bhs.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogNavigationSearchResultCmd?langId=-1&storeId=13077&catalogId=34096&beginIndex=1&viewAllFlag=false&pageSize=40&searchTermScope=3&searchTermOperator=LIKE&searchType=ALL&sort_field=Relevance&searchTerm=baked+beans&x=0&y=0

When I was in there people were snatching them off the shelves like there was no tomorrow and I wonder what the people who receive them will think. Times are hard for everyone so I can't imagine many people being grateful for this sort of thing.

Now, now....I'll not have a word said against the large ceramic jar full of Sherbet Dabs. :rotfl:

....Maybe I can soak my weary feet one at a time in the jar afterwards. See....there's always a positive somewhere. :D

My friend likes marmite and every year is innundated with marmite themed 'items'! She has marmite apron, slippers, wall hanging, bottle opener, etc etc etc. She hates it!

You should have saved it, we could have done a deal. It would have perfectly matched the 'fake tree trunk holding a set of olive forks with duck's heads on them' that I got once :)

We do Christmas lists or we ask each other. Makes sense. BiL's not getting any more itunes cards from me though, because he got £150 worth in August, for his birthday. I know he'll use them but it's a bit much when everyone gives the SAME gift.

I have bought a nice (looking) single malt. In a box. So it won't be a pain to wrap.

Mind you they don't always stick to the lists. Last year they clubbed together and bought me a kindle I didn't want. I love it.:)
    (I just didn't THINK I wanted it!)

I didn't think I wanted a Kindle either, but I got one for my birthday, and I do love it.

Speaking of Kindles - does everyone know Amazon do a 'Wish List' - it goes on your bookmark bar, and whenever you see something online that you'd like, you simply click on 'Add to Wish List' and it will add it. It doesn't have to be from Amazon websites, it will take anything. I circulate mine before Christmas and birthday, just in case anyone needs any ideas...
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I've seen the Heinz stuff in loads of shops. I think it's a fashionable brand now, like Marmite's been for a while.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Aprons and tea-towels are terrible Christmas presents anyway, I don't care if they have Heinz, Marmite or a picture of Brad Pitt's @rse on them.

If anyone dared to buy me a tea-towel for Christmas, they'd end up with their dinner in their lap!:mad:

I do like a Sherbert Dab though! ;)

When I started to live with my OH, I found out that he had never bought himself socks or underpants, even though he was in his late thirties.
His mother stopped buying them to him for christmas when I moved in, I only found out year or so later when I threw away one of the last few socks and found out he is short on them I said why didn't get any more and he told me!!:-)
She then said 'of course I stopped buying them, didn't want to make you think he is mummy's boy'
    O.k., but for christmas??
