I find it hard to understand how anyone in a committed, trusting relationship can be financially worse off than their partner.

We have separate cars, separate bank accounts. If I sit down and think about it it, I pay all the utility bills, council tax, phone, broadband, satellite TV, TV licence, insurance, mortgage etc and my wife pays for food. As we earn pretty much the same, this leaves her with rather more money in her bank account at the end of the month than I have in mine. I don't see myself as being considerably worse of than her and neither of us would laugh at the other if asked to pay a bill with the other's name on it. Car insurance for example. It's all 'our' money after all.
  • Oh, I am actually on the insurance as a named driver - I still wouldn't dream of driving it but it did save him £200 a year on the Insurance! thats his payment for driving me occasionally to the shops :D
  • I personally wouldnt be paying towards any of the car running costs based on the info you provided. It's his choice to have a car therefore his responsibility to run it and all costs associated with it.

    Goodluck
  • With all household stuff, we go right down the middle.

Before I leant to drive I would pay my own bus fares to take the kids to school and OH would pay his own train fare to work. But the car was ours even though I couldn't drive it.

I paid for all my own lessons and passed my test 3 months ago and I now drive the car everyday. I put in my own petrol and OH put his own in too (he travels about 80 miles a week for hobbies 2 evenings a week) but tax insurance and any repairs we split, although sometimes he will pay more as he earns more than me but I don't expect it.

Im the only driver in our house, my oh is learning, but we have one pot all 'our' money goes in, all our 'bills' come out.

    Whatever is left we share!

There is no his or her money, this was left on the doorstep the day 'him' and 'her' became 'we' and this works for us and has worked for the last 8 years.
There's this place in me where your fingerprints still rest, your kisses still linger, and your whispers softly echo. It's the place where a part of you will forever be a part of me.

Yes thank goodness, feel like a dying breed.

I dont think I could do it separately, I would have to start charging for child care. Lol

We're the same - everything goes into joint account, and bills are paid from there.
