I don't have the internet in my flat but pay £15 per month for my mobile and use 3G on my phone. If I need to write a letter or fill in a job App I use the local library. Not ideal but worth the money saved on not having a phone line or internet bill. You will get used to it...really not as bad as it sounds!

City Lass then, It is quite bad if it costs you a fiver just to get the bus to the library, which is often the case of people living in the country as many rural village library's have been shut by councils to save money. Often only dial up is available as companies refuse to install broadband networks in rural areas. What few bus services remaining are poor and limited, Where I live, the only remaining bus service, runs just 3 times a day after council cuts, starting after nine, ending by three.

Larger Tesco shops have free WiFi, you just use your clubcard number to log on.

Was just going to say all coffee shops (starbucks/costa/mcdonalds etc etc) all have free wifi and most dont even expect you to buy anything (tho you can get a 99p filter coffee).

Personally i cant imagine job searching without the internet at home, not only applying but researching for interviews etc all needs the net. Id look at the cheapest broadband deals, my brother only pays £5.99 per month and i assume u already have line rental.

Wetherspoons has free wifi, and their soda water is also free.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

Far from it!!! More rural than you would imagine! Most companies refuse to deliver, nearest tesco 1.5hrs away...wont deliver..our library opens a few hrs a week. Some things are a priority in life, some things aint...

or shock horror, maybe Jobcentres should provide internet access for job search or a card which allows free access elsewhere.

Actually that ain't a bad idea when you think about it. 3G dongles are cheap enough that they realistically could supply claimaints with a dongle and credit to help those in rural areas search for work.

I wouldn't group internet access together with Sky+ and Lovefilm - the first is almost essential, the others are most definitely not.
  • And that is why they bundle it in - to stop you giving it up.

Actually, our jobcentre does have PCs which are available to use by members of the public.
