What if you don't have internet?

Everybody assumes we all have internet access. How do you go on with job searches if you cut your bills to pay only mortgage/rent and utilities thus being able to not go hungry. When you are told you are not eligible for help to mortgage for the first 13 weeks, ring your lender and say hey I can't afford to pay my mortgage but what the hell I have Sky plus and internet. Will the lender not suggest your mortgage is the priority? So if I cut my outgoings to the bare minimum and forgo internet and Lovefilm (my only pleasure and yes I know that's sad) and my only outgoings are absolutely necessary bills, then how would I access job searches? Any help and advice is appreciated.

Does your library offer internet access? Many libraries do now and most, though maybe not all, offer free access. I appreciate getting to the library regularly isn't always easy for everyone but could that be an option for you?

Libraries or see if there is a local job club
  • Thank you Hmm71 I will certainly try my library. It's a 20 minute walk and the exercise will do me good. I just hope that they do free access because I am so watching the pennies.

By visiting the library & job centre or using friends/family computers

Personally though, Internet would be the last thing I gave up, especially if job hunting. I'd give up tv licence first
  • My library requires you to be a member and then you only get 30 mins at a time and it's first come first and then have to get back in line again.

At the risk of sounding grabby... is the internet access free at the job club? There's one in Radcliffe I could get to. I so hate sounding like I want something for nothing.

Everyone has free Internet access, you may not lave your own computer but there are plenty of places you can go to use their facilities.
Lots of us get by and are quite happy with Freeview/Freesat

    Sorry about your situation.
I'm no expert, but do check out your local public library and or central public library. Most offer free Internet access to members (free) for up to an hour, or more in some cases (normally based on a booking system). Some central/larger public libraries may offer/include employment/training services. Also, many subscribe to collections of online references sources which should enable you do some research on prospective employers or hone your skills.
Spending some time at your local library may enable you to save a little on daytime heating/electricity bills etc.

However much you pay for iLoveFilm, do check your local library's DVD collection and/or free viewing facilities, or Freeview...

    Best of luck

You need to check first, there are several local ones to me and you get to use the internet, coffee and tea making facilities, loos etc.

If there isn't one, speak to your local Council or community learning and see if they would be willing to set one up.

If you are really motivated you can get together with others and set up your own workclub, the DWP will give you a bit of set up funding and you can usually get permission to use your local library, or a room in an community centre to get it off the ground, check that you can get free internet.

My library only allowed 1 hour a day free internet access, which is okay for just checking your emails and things but not great for job searching. For a while I used to have to go every day, and borrowed my OH's card so I could log out and in again with his details for an extra hour. If you have a laptop you could probably find some wifi hotspots.

I did quite like my library trips just to have a regular thing to do in the morning but it was far from ideal.
