simple way to solve this for you, get the police to check with the woman counting out you cash if she remebers any scotish cash, if she doesnt then it proves the money handed over has been switched on their end and someone elses problem, if she says she does then it was her that robbed her employers.

oh forgot to add in my last post make sure if this matter hasnt been resolved before you leave the flat that you dont hand over the last months rent or you may end up with a world of fun and games trying to get it back.

ot but i dont get the whole scottish money thing, why have we got a different currancy pegged at exactly the same exchange rate. ive only ever had 1 person refuse my cash when i was down south and that was a cabbie who lost their tip and got paid in loose change out of spite.

English banks don't give out Scottish notes(unless asked for).

Jolly good ED, sounds like the crims have made a !!!!-up, trying to pass unusual notes.
Scottish banknotes are unusual in that they are technically not legal tender anywhere in the UK – not even in Scotland – they are in fact promissory notes. Indeed, no banknotes (even Bank of England notes) are now legal tender in Scotland, there being no such item defined in Scots Law. Nevertheless, like debit cards and credit cards, they are used as money because they are commonly understood and agreed to be money.

I like NI notes, they're nice & bright, but no-one outside NI takes them even in Scotland!
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

When I worked in a bank Scottish notes were kept separately from all other notes & listed separately in the cashier's till book. If the cashier had picked up scottish notes by accident it would be clear in her till record that her Scottish total had reduced, so should be easily traceable.

But as others have pointed out you would have noticed! When you handed the money to the agent, didn't she/he count it? They would have noticed then surely??
Thanks to all who post comps :A :T

For an amount that size, surely they gave you crisp new notes? In which case, there's no way any scottish ones could have crept in.
  • it will be easy to establish whether the lady the OP gave the money to is involved or not because she can either admit that she was given english notes or deny it. If she denies ever receiving english notes she is necessarily implicated as who in their right mind wouldn't remember being given a huge wad of scottish notes in england? She can also confirm that that the money was given in sealed envelopes.

I suspect that it was done by someone very desperate because swapping english notes for fake scottish notes is not a well thought out plan! It should be quite easy for the police to establish who the guilty party is likely to be.

    Afternoon again to everyone.

Unfortunately no more news from the police. However, I did receive a letter from the estate agents in reply to the letter we sent. We basically said that as far as we were concerned, we had paid our money, which was checked, the contracts were signed and there was no problem. They replied saying thank you for the letter, and that any further correspondance will be via the police who are looking into the matter on their behalf.

Bit strange really being as we phoned the police first!

Either way, it's now just the waiting game, so as I have said, I will update when I find out anything more. Im less worried now though, as I am certain the bank never gave us any Scottish notes, and that when it was being checked there was no Scottish notes in there.

I just hope someone gets arrested for this.

    Cheers

Nope not strange but badly worded.

The EA would have contacted their legal department and been told not to say anything until after the police investigation is finished.

If they harass you in anyway you must report them to the police because no-one should interfere with or intimidate anybody involved in a criminal case.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • I think it's best you have nothing more to do with them unless you absolutely have to. Even then, make sure it's in writing and you keep a copy. I'd also send anything to them via recorded delivery so they can't deny ever having received it.

Thank you for keeping us informed, it's intriguing and I love a good whodunnit :D
