Ok another week another March to the office, I ran this past my father who unlike him says I should call it a day, I tend to agree but again want another opinion.

So did overtime last night but couldn't tonight because of childcare issues, I was called to the office, they want overtime each night from now until xmas which will take me over the 50 hour per week mark, this is hard when you don't want to be their full stop. I cant do any weds but the issue is this is all to much overtime to begin with, I cant stick it. I've to go away tonight and have a think as it was put which basically means do it or your gone. What would you do?
  • What I would do in this position would be to say that I would struggle due to childcare issues as my wife works etc and the children cant be left alone etc.
I think your stuck between a rock and a hard place really and I feel your pain. I know what its like to detest your workplace as I had serious depression in my last job.
If I were you and I thought that I might do something stupid because it was getting to me that much then I would leave as no job is worth it.
If you think you can bare it for a tiny bit longer then I would review the situation in January. I would also tell the boss now you will not put up with being shouted at.

Thanks, he's looking to see me again tomorrow to see if I have sorted the problem out. I've a lot of thinking to do tonight, its not just about the overtime issue its just generally being treated like crap. One lesson I've learned is any job is certainly not better than no job, I've never been so stressed and misserable.
  • You seem in quite a measured state of mind. Think immediately about what you need from this job but don't do anything rash. You may aswell use this time to look for another job. Just say "yes boss" and nod your head. Keep a low profile and remember that at some point you will be laughing as you walk out of that door. Set yourself a target date to hit and make sure you are looking after your own future.

dont normally comment on these types of threads, however, i am going to make an exception, first of all, have you signed a disclaimer saying you are willing to work more than 47 hours a week, if you havent you dont have to do overtime, it isnt compulsary.

Secondly, i walked out of my job last week, due to "bullying" only realised two nights ago, that it was bullying, started off little things, i hadnt done this how they do it , missed this etc,,,, asked for training, got training, all i learnt was how to cut corners, rather than do my job properley. Few days later, a supervisor, the same position as me, started leaving me little jobs to do, as she didnt want to, so i could do them, i did, but then got bollocked for not doing my jobs, ie, i had listened to someone other than manager. Next thing manager tells me, from now on in to listen to other supervisor, as she is supporting her!!!

I plodded on, but supervisor then told me, that x y and z was going to get mentioned in my 6 monthly supervision review,,,,so be prepared, got to my review and yes, x y and z got mentioned,,,,,,i asked other supervisor, bearing in mind she is same as me,,,,, how she knew, and it was because she told manager what to say in everyones reviews, as she wanted to toughen her up!!!!

She then started telling me that manager had been slagging me off, calling me etc, and did i mind!!! course i minded, but , was too angry to say or do anything, then i was told i was going to be made into a !!!!! just like her, as thats how she wanted us too work,,,, was told to even refuse people wee breaks, just because i can!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then i had manager telling me to do "a" and other supervisor telling me to do "b",,, by then i didnt know my own name, was crying all the time, great for the diet tho!!!!!!!

The final straw was i walked in and supervisor asked if i were going to xmas party, i said no, she said oh u are, your expected to be there, the area manager said, everyone has to be there or they will have to work in another shop,,,, i said fine, i will go to another shop, the supervisor hadnt been to any of the previous parties, so i didnt like been told i had to go, when i have been to them all, they were rubbish!

Then she decided, that in my best interests, they would be moving me to the worst shop in the area, as they thought my confidence was a bit low,,,, ummm i wondered why! I told her i wasnt going to party, i wasnt going to another shop, and i felt very very pressured by them.

I promptly came home, and tortured the job site, as it is i have found two jobs, neither of which i particularly want to do, one is temp one is long term, however, i wasnt and couldnt stay somewhere what had made me so unhappy.

Sorry for the long essay, but its so nice to know, it wasnt just me, who has been thru hassle, but that with grit and determination, you will get through it :)

oh, after a phone call from an ex colleaugue this morning, the manager is now shouting about resigning, as the supervisor has ground her down, manager cant go to area manager to complain, as he is the other supervisors husbands best friend!! and three colleaugues have handed their notice in too. best wishes and good luck
  • Hi Falko

    How has it been today?

Good luck with your OU course (read some old threads today).

You ARE an intelligent person & I truly hope you can stick at this horrible job until you can until you find something better.

Hey, Yep done a couple of OU modules previously, this !!!!! hole gave me the motivation to go back to it so thats something positive at least.

I had a pretty sleepless night last night worrying about all this, I went to see the HR guy today and just caved in saying I will do overtime as and when required, Not really a lot else I could do although I'd love to tell them to take a run and jump but I do need the money and jobs around here are damn scarce, I thought maybe coming up to Xmas the job situation would improve but I've saw no improvement at all, If I can make it to January I'll be happy getting Xmas out of the way then what ever happens can happen
  • Good luck!
  • Good luck falko, remember we're here to listen to you. Not much we can do to help but we can listen :)
  • I get very annoyed by the way some people are treated by these so called "Managers??" I spent a long time in the armed forces and found most civilians had a pre-concieved idea that we did a lot of shouting and barking out orders, bullying even. In fact a friend of mine was asked at an interview how he would get people to work for him without shouting at them. Yet I never experienced the sort of treatment that I am reading about here.

Yes, I know businesses are having it tough at the moment and a lot of people want work but that is no excuse to mis-treat their most valuable assests.

Falko, I think your manager needs to learn how to do just that,

    - Manage.

Good luck and hope you get through it.
