Just a thought - is all the wood sub-standard or just some of it?

If you can tell before you start sawing it, could you ask the boss to come to the machine and explain what the result is going to be so that he can witness what goes wrong when he buys cheap stuff.

Or if you can't tell until you've sawn some off, stop and ask him to have a look and ask if he wants you to carry on.

    Sorry, I don't know much about saw-mills.

Well I wouldn't want any of it in my house, its all the cheapest garbage rife with woodworm he can source and expects miracles with it, in my previous job which also involved working with wood even the worst wood we had was 10 times better than this stuff.

You can't talk to the man, he ignores someone on the bottom rung like me, we are not worthy to speak to someone of such greatness, you have to go through rank believe it or not, supervisor, manager, him.

Sorry, I just re-read the thread & realised I had duplicated part of TrickyWicky's post. I just wondered if there was any way the situations could be diffused before the boss came down roaring.

Your "colleague" keeping his mouth shut might help but he's possibly in same situation as you i.e he hate's it there.

First week the same guy reported me for being slow, I mean on week 1 of a job I'd never done before which landed me in the office. So thats what I have to contend with, nasty people.

Thanks for all the support, I know I am doing the right thing by sticking it out, I just hope something better comes along soon.
  • Bit like the 1st fixed term job I had - the nastiness started at Director level, got passed on to managers, got passed on to supervisors who passed it on to their people. Everybody hated it there. Staff didn't come in for as much but I had never experienced anything like it - cried at work on my 9th working day then kept myself to myself but it was very lonely and horrible.

It's the 3rd week of November, only another 4/5 weeks to Christmas, stick at it, keep your mouth shut, get the prezzies & try to have a good holiday.

Keep looking for something else but try to enjoy Xmas & New Year.

    Best of luck.
  • And most of the aggro started because the jobs hadn't been priced up correctly to start with so the next thing was booking time to the next job which then ran over and so on.

I think people on the shop floor could run places better - they know what's what and are more realistic.

    I can beat that..

I started working as a CEO for a council a few years back (traffic warden to you and me) in an area I'd only ever been to for the job interview - I didn't know the place at all. Went to this one car park once with my trainer who then at the slightest bit of drizzle would claim its raining, can't work in the rain etc. The next day they grassed me up because I didn't know where to find this car park, told the management I wasn't learning, paying attention etc despite the fact we'd spent 3/4 of the day skiiving in cafes, other council buildings etc so they could chat to others non-stop on their mobile. To put it bluntly this person was the laziest ****er I've known who didn't want to train but wanted to slate me for not learning in a place I'd never been to. I was turned into the blacksheep within a fortnight and still stayed for years of abuse for stupid things and I mean really stupid things. I was screwed - I couldn't grass (they had a relative there in a high position) but I couldn't win either. I got a b*ll*ck!ng once because the supervisor didn't give me the keys to a site that I needed access to . Came back once from two months off with depression and the next day the boss was trying to talk me into resigning

Then there was the time I was caught being a bit lenient towards a member of the public.. got hauled in, told no leniency, rules are there for enforcing etc.. So off I goes, whacks a ticket on a car that 'technically' was contravening but not seriously.. got a b*ll*ock!ng for that too because I didn't give leniency  I carried all that (and so much more) around with me every working day, every day off, every day of annual leave etc. It was all I could think about for years, the unfairness, the way I'd been set up etc. It dragged me right down for years until I left and told them what I thought of them and why.

Some (actually quite a lot of) employers get a twisted kick out of making your life impossible, they enjoy the power, seeing you get stressed etc. One of my other bosses was always every day boasting about how he'd give people "enough rope to hang themselves with" and how he was going to "get that c**t sacked" etc. Every single day he had it in for someone for something that he'd never trained anyone for because he was too lazy. New job, new contract / site for the company and he didn't do ANY training for the new staff (not even the basics) yet would start screaming and shouting when people didn't do the job to his high standards. The guy was a real screw loose and no-one liked him or his ways. You were hated while at work and hated if you were unavailable for overtime (yet if you helped them out for overtime when they were short staffed they you were hated for that too).

Whatever you do falko, remember you're not the only one who has been through sheer hell.

Yes I think your right, this nastiness starts at the top here also and gets passed down through the ranks.

I can relate to the loneliness as I've done the exact same, I imagine I come across as an add character as I keep myself to myself and don't mix which isn't me really, I'm an easy going kind of guy and can usually get along with anyone but this place has taken the wind outta my sails so I keep myself to myself, eat lunch by myself etc etc.

Wow. Yes I think some folk just like seeing others stressed out I can relate totally. The overtime thing just about sums me up aswell, I think I mentioned about getting hauled into the office over that to, damned if you do damned if you don't so u can't win really.

Great to know others have went through this carp also, I mean it shouldn't be so hard to earn a living surely.

Can't imagine how bad it must be to work at a place like that. I work at a small (10 people) engineering shop, and we all get on very well, bit of banter, but all in good humour.
If I was you, when I had found another job, or had absolutely had enough, I would find a way of "accidently" loading the most expensive machine wrongly & try as much damage as possible on the last day.
