Looking for a soup that tastes as nice as Heinz, without costing as much as Heinz.

  • Home Bargains do an own brand soup, can't remember what the brand is offhand J something?? Anycase it tastes JUST the same as Heinz, it's about 40p a tin for the cream of tomato etc & 65p a tin for the chunky (which is the same as BIG soup range). Honestly I can't find a difference at all, and have compared them side by side & taste.

Like some others, I agree that if you make a sufficiently large quantity then surely "home-made" is best. The salt content aside from anything else is un-naturally high in many of the tinned soups.

If I make a large pan-full when I can find some good vine tomatoes on offer, I will end up with at least 15 to 20 servings. It freezes very well - I even add cream before freezing which so many say you shouldn't do but I have yet to have a bad result.
  • Am I the only one that finds Heinz Cream of Tomato soup bland?

I think Baxter's tomato soup is much nicer than Heinz, but that's usually even more expensive, but OP you just need to check for offers and stock up, or try the bargain shops. Even at full price, its still a cheap meal though at less than a pound a tin - even with a hunk of bread added and I like to put some grated cheese in my tomato soup, it doesn't add up to much and is certainly cheaper than a shop bought sandwich or Greggs/McDs etc if you are thinking about work lunches.

I usually make my own soup (lentil, carrot + coriander, minestrone, brocolli/cauliflower/blue cheese, pea and ham) - I have two Covent Garden soup company recipe books and the results are MUCH nicer than tinned soup. Freezes great and good for lunches when there's nowt else in.

I've never made tomato, possibly as I generally make soup as a 'use up' recipe and don't usually have spare tomatoes - I also think that unless you grow your own, it probably costs more, but I like the ideas about using passata or tinned toms and might give that a go!

Heinz 4 packs of Tomato Soup also £2.00 at Morrison's according to HUKD.

Don't think I've ever paid more than 50p a tin.

When I make a veg soup - depending what I have loads of in the fridge or picked up in the yellow sticker section, I make soup to do me for 3 servings and the only salt I use is whats in the Oxo cube. So each soup has about 0.75-1g salt. I once had a tin of mushroom soup that had 3g salt and I could taste was the salt!

You can get a better tasting soup for less with getting a pack of value pasata from the supermarkets or Lidl's or Aldi's own, a couple of tomatoes and some basil. Blitz them in a blender for a soup which, not only is cheaper but better for you.

You are not in a club of one. However I use it as a base to add extras to to give it some bite

I'm in the "make your own" camp too. I find all tinned soup too salty. I freeze whats not eaten in bags in the freezer, i can fit them in everywhere ! My favourite is home made chicken noodle soup, takes about 10 minutes to make. Onion, garlic, carrots, chicken, stock, celery, flat leaf parsley and noodles. No fat and low salt.

Just in case anyone's interested, this recipe for cream of tomato soup is the closest to Heinz I've ever found - really tasty. Add a pinch (1/4 teaspoon) of ground cloves for the authentic Heinz flavour.
