  • Don't bother with the branded name ones, you really are just paying for the brand. Tesco sell Loratadine one-a-day packs for £0.79 and they really are exactly the same as Clarityn. However, I have told this to some people and they go: oh no, I'll stick to what I know. Fine, pay more money then! :p

We have a very stringent guideline system on drugs in this country, if it says: 10mg loratidine on it, no matter what the brand name is, it is what it says it is so don't waste your money on brands.

They would have been £4.98 here.

    No connection except satisfied customer.

These packs are £2.49 for 30 tablets. he OP got 120 tablets, so cost from C4U would be £9.96 - still not to be sneezed at (sorry!).

I bought a few packs of Cetirizine (Zirtek) last year pretty cheap, and looking this year I see that it is cheaper to buy in bulk (10 packs x 30 tablets minimum) - so it would be worthwhile getting together with fellow sufferers and sharing the cost.

    Cetirizine (Zirtek) Tablets:
    pack of 7 (minimum purchase = 3 packs) = £0.79 (11.3p each)
    pack of 30 (minimum purchase = 1 pack) = £2.19 (7.3p each)
    bulk pack of 30 (minimum purchase = 10 packs) = £1.49 (5p each)

Compares well with the Zirtek branded tablets:
    pack of 7 = £2.46 (35p each)
    pack of 21 = £6.95 (33p each)
    pack of 30 = £11.95 (40p each)

    Hope this helps somebody.

Thanks everybody for all that great advice - we're having a family visit to the doc on Monday to stock up on hayfever medication - OK for DD's who are 14 cos theirs will be free! Not so good for OH and me! If we are only allowed 1 months supply will definitely look into getting the tablets elsewhere.

Have to say I never buy branded items anymore as they're such a rip off and in fact in one chemist (can't remember which one) they said there own brand eye drops/nasal spray was exactly the same as the named one but loads cheaper.

Loads of people still fall for the old brand name game.
My Gran still insists that when her tablets change they stop working as well, even though the active ingredients are exactly the same.

  • That's just placebo for you!

I've had people say to me before: oh I only take nurofen as other ibuprofen tablets don't work as well!
  • Unfortunately, none of the over-the-counter tablets work for me. Have an appointment with doc tomorrow.
Any advice/experience with any prescription tablets to discuss with him would be appreciated!
I may be shy, but that doesn't make me an angel ;)

The generic equivalent of this is also available from chemist-4-u. The active ingredient is the same, but other ingredients must be different, as it has a distinctly different smell.

On the subject of buying tablets form chemist-4-u - I decided to stock up last year and get a couple of years worth. However, the expiry date is June this year. I intend to use them through the whole of the pollen season this year, but I will buy some fresher ones in time for next year.

So buy enough to last for the whole summer, but if you are intending to buy for next year as well, I suggest that you contact them to find out what the expiry date will be.
