Good result. The moral is never to assume a 12m warranty-many electrcial devices have 24m.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

In reality there is no set period. Goods are meant to last for a "reasonable" amount of time. Regardless of warranty length, 13 months is not a a reasonable amount of time for a brand new TV to last before it fails, and neither is 24 months.

A manufacturer's warranty does have a set period. You are referring to a potential claim under SOGA, which would have to be a claim against the retailer, and an entirely different matter.
The OP has done the sensible thing and left Comet out of the equation.

Yes a manufacturers warranty is limited as you say. There would be an exception to that in the event that there was a known fault with the product in question and in this instance that might well be the case as somobody else on here has reported a similar fault with the same model I think.
  • You don't ask, you don't get.

I assumed Comet would be a waste of time. I always go straight to the manufacturer.

I remember having a problem with a Samsung camera I bought once after a few months. Samsung sorted that too..

Maybe it's more than co-incidence I have a Samsung camera, phone and TV!

Yes on this occasion because of the situation with Comet you were right to go to the manufacturer. Normally though, the supplier would be expected to sort it out for you. It's good that Samsung have kinda owned up to the problem and are taking it on board.

But if it is still in the manufacturers' warranty then Samsng have no option but to 'take it in board'. Comet's position is irrelevant.

I did not say that Samsung had any option but to take it on board. What I was trying to get across is that in normal circumstances the contract is between the buyer and the seller, and in the first instance the redress is to the seller.

Correct, but Comet will simply return it to Samsung for repair, so it makes sense to just deal direct with the manufacturer while in warranty.
Under the present circumstances, if it goes back to Comet it will probably never be seen again. And, if it's a few weeks out of warranty, as may be the case, Comet would reject any responsibility anyway.

Yes, you are right, Comet would return it to Samsung. That's how this is meant to work in reality.

Yes, you are also right in that if it goes to Comet it might not be seen again and because of these special circumstances concerning Comet it is far better to to have Samsung take ownership if the problem directly.
