Number-porting query

I am about to end my contract with Vodafone and start one with O2. If i choose to port my existing number across to O2, will the people who call me be billed for a call to a Vodafone number or to an O2 one?

The reason I ask is that most people I'm in contact with are on O2 and they say that if I port my Vodafone number across, they will be charged for a Vodafone call when they phone me, rather than an O2 call, thus costing them more.

Anyone know?

From the day your number is ported over, your number then is operated by O2 hence will be charged at O2 rate.

From another mobile it will be charged as per your new network.
From a landline it will be charged as per the network your number was originally from.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I'd check that a bit more. Nowadays most networks offer cross-network minutes, but the tariffs that are only same network and landlines sometimes have in the small print that numbers ported on to the same network are excluded; what happens to ones ported away I have no idea.

I'd suggest you and your friends ask O2 directly

In the older days o2 used to charge xnet rates for calls to o2 mobiles that were ported from another network. I know they don't do this now (except if using the PAYG "friends" bolt-on as the t&c for them state calls to numbers on o2 ported from other network will be charged as xnet rates).

I'm also on o2 and have rung o2 mobiles ported from voda and t-mobile, and have only ever been charged their standard rate and not xnet rates.

Like BexTech said, calling from a landline the call will be charged as if it was still on Voda.

I'm not sure if anyone on voda calling someone on o2 that had their number ported from voda would be charged xnet rates or not!

    Bex is almost right.

Last time I checked, from landlines and PAYG mobiles it depends on the ORIGINAL network. On contract mobiles it depends on the NEW network.

It's basically a complete mess, not least because NOBODY can tell which network a ported number is on - and hence nobody can tell which network ANY mobile number is on, because it may have been ported.

This doesn't appear true to for me as I'm on o2 (online PAYG) and call friends who are now on o2 that were originally ported from voda & t-mobile and I've not noticed any sudden huge drop in credit?!?

Last time I checked it was 40ppm xnet compared to 25p for first 3mins so I'm sure I would have noticed.

I've just e-mailed o2 so will await their reply and I'll post it here as soon as I get it.

(I hope its classed as same network otherwise I wont be ringing those friends anymore - lol :rotfl: )

4.7 When you port a mobile number to another mobile provider there may be some confusion over charges applied to that number. Charges for calls from landline phones to a ported mobile number stay the same as they were before. However, for calls from mobile phones, charges may increase when you call someone who was with the same mobile provider as you, but has ported their number to a different mobile provider. But, where the person you are calling has ported their number to the same mobile provider as you, lower charges normally apply. Other than that, charges usually stay the same.

4.8 If you want to find out whether a number you wish to call is on the same mobile network as you, you should contact your mobile provider.

    In other words:

From another mobile it will be charged as per your new network.
From a landline it will be charged as per the network your number was originally from.

Further to BexTech's post & my last post,

I have had a reply from my email to o2 regarding calls to numbers now on o2 but ported from another network:-
Thank you for contacting O2 Customer Service.

I would inform you that if you call your friends who have ported their number from another network to O2 the calls to their phones would be classes as calls to O2 to O2.

I would also inform you that your current tariff is Online Pay As You Go Talkalot...
The email then just goes on to remind how much calls, texts, mms costs, etc.

    Hope this helps?!
