straw takes a good year at least to completely break down too - still had some in my bin that hadn't composted completely yesterday

Dunno, maybe its because a lot of it will contain wood which may take too long to break down for a commercial composting operation?
All I seem to hear is blah blah blah!

Hi I am a new gardener and have just ordered my cut price compost bin from my local council. My question is really silly I know but can I compost rabbit poo, straw and sawdust.

Have a read of the compost discussion thread :)
It will answer all your questions, there's also some good lnks about compost in the useful links sticky at the top of the board.

Hi new to this board. Thought it about time i got green fingers :j .

Ive made some lovely compost and I would like to try my hand at growing something other than flowers this year. Thought I might have a go at toms and strawberrys. Have some seeds and have on its way a tom plant, and will got some strawberry plants.

Im gonna sieve the compost so its smooth...but...my question is this...do i need to add anything else to the compost i have made...

Im gonna be growing in containers as the earth round here is like clay..

Anything else can anyone advice that is good for a beginner and is ok to grow in a container?

    Many thanx

    Well done. :T

Compost is great stuff and you don't have to mix it with anything just bung it in to the container and it should be fine. some people do like to mix it though (say with a little grit sand or soil) but I think that is personal choice.

Toms and strawberries are good to grow in containers just keep em well watered in summer to stop them from drying out.

    Good luck

Your compost should be really rich. Home made compost is called black gold by gardeners for a very good reason! All I would suggest is that if you grow your tomatoes on in pots as I do then add some large stones or broken up polystyrene first to help with drainage before adding your compost. I think you will do really well!

Could be worth adding a little bit of Farmyard Manure to the mix. I'm no expert on Gardening but I get told these interesting facts by the father-in-law.
