Although the compost on this site is ready made, I don't see why home made compost cannot be used for your bulbs.0 -
No reason why not, I always add abit of vermiculite to the bottom of the planting hole to keep them dry. HTH
Or you could mix it in with your compost.0 -
I know I'm not meant to put weeds in with the compost, is this because they will just carry on growing? Reason I'm asking is that as I'm skimming the top of my allotment I don't know what to do with the stuff I'm skimming off. It's basically a mixture of dead and alive grass, dead and alive weeds and a small amount of soil.
I was wondering if I put it all in a black rubbish bag and tie it shut would it all die and then be composted? Other than that I'm not sure what to do with it other than put it in the bin which isn't very green fingered is it!Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
Do you have a green waste recycling scheme in your area? Even if you don't, you can probably dispose of it at the tip.0
-
If seeds don't go in; then you could go with the black bin bag and leave it for the summer; they should have dies off by the autumn and if you go through it before you use it for mulch then you should be ok.
It's probably no different to rotavating it to be honest. And a shame to waste all the grass and soil.0 -
V Chic I wanted to try and use it for compost really, saves money buying it!!
Zazen - how would I make sure I don't get seeds in there? And do you think that come autumn it would be actual compost or would I still need to compost it?Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0 -
Hi I am a new gardener and have just ordered my cut price compost bin from my local council. My question is really silly I know but can I compost rabbit poo, straw and sawdust.0
-
My son has a pet rabbit and the council said it could not go in the green composting bins. Very confused0
-
We compost it, though the sawdust takes ages to break down so we've ended up with 3 compost binsBulletproof0

If you're composting wood shaving pet bedding make sure you put plenty of water on it as it takes ages for the moisture to penetrate into the wood properly. Also make sure you give the layers a good mix as you put each weeks bedding in, and add green stuff like veg or grass clippings with it if possible.
I tend to find that the green stuff breaks down, then the composter turns into a wormery as the worms have a go at the wood. Like tru says, you'll need more than one bin as it takes so long to break down. All I seem to hear is blah blah blah!0
