Do teachers really throw away homebaked gifts?

This, in my opinion is wrong and is why so many bog standard presents are given and end up wasted.
In the current climate buying 5 boxes of £1 chocolates is enough to break the bank for some people and other parents shouldn't make people feel bad if they have higher priorities.
We didn't ever give presents to our teachers when I was in school.
I would give a Christmas card to 1 or 2 teachers who really made an impact on me and I think that means more.
The whole thing seems like a big competition and I don't think teachers are in the wrong for throwing things away/donating to charity shops or re gifting.
I do think it is sad that they cannot trust homemade food, though I do understand to a certain degree.
What needs to stop is the playground behaviour by the parents.
To the op - I think i'd avoid going to so much time and effort in the homebaking and let your child make a thank you card.
And this is why my children's Head has now asked that we don't buy gifts for the teachers - they are worried it's too much money for some and are happy with a card, or just a Merry Christmas.0 -
I'm a food teacher and the things i have seen would make your toes curl!! Last year i taught a girl whose finger nails were black underneath because she refused to wash (her hands, body and hair) she also use to wet herself on purpose and i refused to eat her food!!
I loved getting thank you cards and letters, they are my favourite!! Every christmas cards i get off my pupils goes up at home.0 -
On a different note - my daughter regularly makes "messes" at the child minders and she always lets me know if they are "delicious" or "pretty" LOL
I know it's hard to have that kind of code in a school but it works on a small scale I guess... then again I know her kitchen is spotless and she knows the state of my home as her daughter babysits for usDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Lol my almost 15yr old son wants to be a chief, he says his food tech teacher always use to say to the kids that she doesn't eat ANY food the pupils make so please don't be offended! :;)
However my son made blak pudding scotch eggs last year and she couldn't resist trying them do she now says ' I'm not trying anybody's food but *sons* as I think he's going to be the next Gordon Ramsey and I want to say I tought him :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I guess that says she thinks he's pretty hygienic, perhaps I won't tell her the state I found under his bed this weekend lol :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
As a secondary school teacher, we don't get as many treats like that but I did recieve some homemade cupcakes and a big victoria sponge from some of my year 11 on my birthday and ate the lot and lived to tell the tale. I think it's unfair to throw it if they have gone to all that effort, although I do fully accept the concerns of receiving things like that from certain pupils!"More people would learn from their mistakes if they weren't so busy denying them." - Harold J. I agree with some posts. Teachers never got presents when I was at school and it does get ridiculous. 29 mugs from the same shop must be a killer. If agift is a must am sure a donation for classroom equipment would be better received by a teacher than something that they would never use themselves. I normally take a tin of roses for the staff room for ALL the school staff to share but I have also donated money for sports equipment as the school was so short and that was really appreciated. Perhaps if the class clubbed together you would be amazed at what can be bought and the kids benefit. I work on the PTA so know how much a donation means to a school.:T0

Food for thought- do all chefs and kitchen staff wash their hands before they cook your meal?0

My child has an ASD a .... but thanks for making a completey baseless assumption about me, you should be ashamed.
You asked. They/we answered.
Job done.
I've got an ASD... I don't battle prejudices, I know I can be an idiot.0 -

I have taken to doing this for Christening gifts etc..
I am going to talk to my children tonight and ask them if they would like to do this in their teachers name. I think it is a lovely idea. We always make hm cards. My SIL is a teacher and she gets many gifts, some of which are lovely and appreciated, others are just appreciated and recycled!!0 -
I am a teacher and am always happy to get gifts, no matter how small, home made, whatever. It's thought that counts. but also equally happy to get a hug or a kind word at the end of each day. I don't throw away baked goods either. I have only been guilty of this once in my 8 years of teaching due to the permanent trail of snot on the boys face....0
