Why get abusive just because someone has a different view from you?
The thing about liking London or not usually comes from what your used to. If you have grown up/lived in London then you will be used to the "downsides" and like the upsides. Same if your from a more rural area, you will be used to the downsides and appreciate the upsides.
Each to their own.
Personally if like Glasgow and Manchester the best. Edinburgh is better for other people, loads love London too.
I didn't think that was abusive. Apologies to any (including somethingcorporate) that felt abused.
London however is one of the greatest cities that the world has ever seen. She was the heart of a Great Empire and is still the first or second greatest city of international trade and of culture. That Hackney and Tulse Hill are crap holes are just one of those things. Thieves are attracted to London as much as great artists, writers and so on.0 -
That you don't like it is neither here nor there.
It's one of the Great cities of the world along with Tokyo, New York and Sao Paolo among others.
I have no idea where you're from but my guess is that it's not somewhere amazing, it's just some parochial crap hole. Am I right? Just another bumpkin that hates the Big Smoke.
I worked for many years in London.
I now live in a parochial crap hole as you put it. Actually in the middle of verdant countryside, next to a quality market town, within 30/40 miles of two major cities to satiate any need for metropolitan living and much closer to wild country that I appreciate.
I'm not a bumkin and know where I would prefer to live, as do many, but many are trapped by the need for a career and job to feed their need to survive.
Was a bit insulting for you gen."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
"big business is parasitic, like a mosquito, whereas I prefer the lighter touch, like that of a butterfly. "A butterfly can suck honey from the flower without damaging it," "Arunachalam Muruganantham0 -

Fair point old thing.
I get a little annoyed that people dismiss places like London. For all its faults, London is a truly great city. I agree that not every one wants to live there, indeed it's not the place for me right now, but it is an amazing place.
I'm with Sam Johnson:When a man is tired of London he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.
That can't be said of Guildford, Slough or even Edinburgh.0 -

LoL. Comedy post of the day. You could not pay me enough to live there.
You couldn't pay me enough not to live there. Each to their own, eh?0 -

most people's experience of london is walking down oxford street or seeing a murder on the news. people are entitled to form an opinion on that basis. other people are entitled to ignore their worthless opinion.0 -

I personally find your current city more appealing but I admit I know little of Sydney.
Thing is, if you've got London in your bones then you will always be drawn there, just like everyone is drawn to some place or another.0 -

I would say London, New York, Paris & they tell me Tokyo are out on their own as the 'Champions League'.
How many other cities could swallow up an Olympic & Paralympic Games, and make such a jolly fine job of it whilst hardly skipping a beat ?
Those in the provinces, and especially in the North of England and Scotland, who do nothing but denigrate London and the SE would do well to remove the chips from their shoulders, lose the sense of grievance and envy, the 'victim' mentality, and the sense of entitlement, get off their a***s and aim to be as positive, enterprising, resilient and self-reliant as many in London and the SE are. They would be better of as a result, and so would the country.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

My concern is that we can not rely purely on London long term.
We often hear people complain that the rest of the country suckles off the teat of the South East.
It isn't really surprising when you consider where our National Galleries / Stadiums / Political HQ / Finance centres are. Millions would inflow to London as a result of normal people up and down the country paying into pensions and savings products.
In my view, Britain was truly great when we respected each region for bringing things which reflected their expertise. Recent years has seen a mantra that finance is all, and anything else can be outsourced.0 -
These days London is almost all of the South East really IMHO.
There are still pockets of resistance......;)
One problem we face is a lack of distinct accent so when we travel around the country and people always seem to think Sussex/Kent people are from London. We can tell the difference straight away, If you make eye contact with a Londoner and say "Good morning" they look at you as though you have "issues".
If London is so Great why do so many Londoners retire to the Country, try and get elected onto every Council from Parish to County level and try and inflict their will on the the existing population. We suffer from this, they retire here and resist nealry all progress ,wanting the nearby "Historic Town" to stay in the 14th Century.Thats what they move here for and they want it to stay that way.
Generally speaking I think Londoners are insecure, If I had an Elephant they would have a box to fit it in.
Theres an old saying about Sussex people: You can pook and you can shove but Sussex folk won't be druv".0 -
My recent vacational visit to London was an acknowledgement that I didn't really know the place, and wanted to give it a fair viewing.
In many ways it did impress, but it also seemed to be absolutely full in terms of the level of activity being placed on the support systems.
Is it really possible to grow London an extra 20% say to compensate for loss of economic activity elsewhere? It's pretty obvious public sector cutbacks are going to hit places like the NE and Wales hard, can London pick up the slack ?0
