    Interesting article, thanks for sharing.

I think there is something in soft power. Britain is talked about and considered far more than should be normal for a country of her size, population and economy. Partly that's because London is such an amazing city but also perhaps it's also due to this stuff.

Are you sure the article isn't 150yrs old when we had a British Empire.
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I remember studying this at uni. At the time, virtually all of the companies making technology for film and music were Japanese, whereas a lot of the content producers were American. The point was made that the hardware could only be bought once, but the content would be bought many times over and reflect a particular worldview.

That concept has stuck in my mind since in terms of cultural economics. Take for example the mere fact that English is the language of this country and has been adopted as a global language, this gives us an advantage over say, France and Germany in terms of world view and the so called creative industries. I don't really know much about cultural economics, but find it an interesting concept, that falls outside of the standard measurements of neo-classical and most modern economic frameworks.

I have mapped out where I live in Hertfordshire against the maps for other metropolises. If I lived the same distance out in Paris or Los Angeles, or one of the mega cities of Asia, I'd still be in the sprawling suburbs. There's a lot to be said for the green belt. I get to live in a proper town but can still get to central London in less than half an hour on a not particularly fast train. You can have the benefits of London "pull" but still live in or near the countryside.

That you don't like it is neither here nor there.

It's one of the Great cities of the world along with Tokyo, New York and Sao Paolo among others.

I have no idea where you're from but my guess is that it's not somewhere amazing, it's just some parochial crap hole. Am I right? Just another bumpkin that hates the Big Smoke.
  • I don't live in London and would not want to but agree London is amazing and probably the most powerful city on the planet. While we here nutters wanting us to hand powers to the Europeans just remember they are very envious of London over in Paris and Berlin. We have the financial capital of the world on our island!

Why get abusive just because someone has a different view from you?

The thing about liking London or not usually comes from what your used to. If you have grown up/lived in London then you will be used to the "downsides" and like the upsides. Same if your from a more rural area, you will be used to the downsides and appreciate the upsides.

    Each to their own.

Personally I like Glasgow and Manchester the best. Edinburgh is better for other people, loads love London too.
