COMET - Which Shops are closing down? (Best Sale)

Options
Hi

I appreciate this sounds 'vulture-esque' and for that I apologise. I like a few others have been underwhelmed by the Comet 'Sale' 10/20% and things can still be found cheaper elsewhere, but I'm in the market for a washing machine and I'm hoping that I might be able to find a bargain in one of the store that is actually closing. (I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne, so stores closing in South Wales aren't any good to me but might help others)

On a side note: Buying on a credit card should give me a resonable level of protection given Comet's situation, shouldn't it?

I would imagine that the stock will be redistributed to other stores which aren't closing ? From what i've read, the sale already on hasn't been that good.

Someone has posted the list on Hot UK Deals.

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/comet-store-closures-up-50-specific-stores-1368399

Sounds like display models only, they can just move the packaged stock to other stores that are staying open.
  • Found this online, hope it helps someone. If anyone knows of the other 14 set for this week I'd appriecate it if you'd share. (Still needing a washing machine)2zpqion.jpeg
  • Sheffield Queens Road also closing but not much of a sale 10 -20% off most things still cheaper on the internet

Allegedly, a member of staff in on Comet store today told my girlfriend's parents that the prices in store are being set by the administrators and that prices were put up just before they started their sale.

They were asking if they could have a discount on something that was on display and was dented, and were told no.

Might just have been a disgruntled employee...

That's hardly a shock. The Administrators have a legal obligation to get as much money as possibly for the stock to pay Comet's debts.

I don't know why people are so surprised that this means that Comet staff can't discount goods at will anymore. Nor why they would want to given that this money is effectively their wages.

No, I think they're trying to con people into thinking they're getting a deal when they're paying MORE after the discount than they would've a week or two ago!

I went into my local Comet today to look for my normal printer ink. The price was £37.99 with a 20% discount, bringing it down to £30.39. Bargain. I nearly bought a multipack, then I remembered:

The price a couple of weeks ago was within £2 of the 3 next-door shops that sell the same item, around the £27.99 price tag. Comet's price is now at least as much as it was before the "discount", probably at least £1 more! What a rip-off

The shop was full of people, most of whom were spending money there thinking they were saving £££.

I know that if an item is in a sale the retailer has to prove the quoted previous price is valid, I'm guessing that "discount"ed items aren't covered by that.

    Con!
  • Agreed. It does seem like a bit of a 'con' at the moment, up the prices to then have a 'sale', personally I'm not fussed about that, if folk aren't price checking then that's their issue. For me, I just wanna find out if I'm gonna get the chance to bag me new washing machine.
  • Oh. Amonst the bad news about a futher 700+ redundancies there was this in the news article today "The administrators said they would be applying more generous discounts across all Comet stores from Tuesday." - BBC NEWS
