OK folks. Here are my main ones.

08freecall - put in an 08 number and it will substitute the national alternative. A bit like SayNoto0870 but automated.
Addons detector - lets you know what addons you have and, most important, scans for those that push from your handset (possible threats)
Banner Zaum - remember the athletes at the Olympic closing ceremony with their Iphones saying "Thank you" in big letters? This does it.
Call recorder - does what it says
Canon EPP - Got a Canon printer? Print directly from the phone without a PC
Gauge Batter Widget - puts the % battery left on the top line and more.
Speed Test - check your data speed
Zedge - loads of ring tones and wallpapers
Chrome to phone - Brilliant! Use Chrome on your PC? Will copy any URL over the air to your phone. If anyone using the PC wants to send you , say, a map so you can find somewhere, they just click on a new icon on Chrome and send it to you.
Androidlost - great app recently recommended on this forum to help you locate a lost/stolen handset. Absolutely brilliant!
Android Assistant & Advanced Task Killer obviously.
    TrackID - what's that tune?
    aCalendar - excellent little calendar
Lock Screen Widget - does what it says
Silent Mode Widget - toggles between Ring/Vibrate/Silent
Data Counter Widget - does what it says.

Obviously lots more as well, (Android handset clearly) but these are all excellent.

My ones (all free from the Google Play Store)

Airdroid - WiFi connection between PC and phone, lets you tfr files both ways/send messages from phone via PC etc. No fiddling about with USB cables.

Blink - if your phone has a configurable LED indicator, to set different notification colours for messages, missed calls, emails etc.

Button Saviour (needs root) - has "soft" buttons on screen for Home, Back, etc, saves bashing your hardware buttons.

DialerEx - a nice T9 replacement for stock in ICS theme

Kammas BackUp SMS - lets you back up/restore/merge SMS messages to your SD card

Jorte Calender - a nice configurable replacement for the stock calendar with loads of widget apps/displays.

SugarSync - if you have the desktop program installed you can access all your PC files through the phone (it's like Dropbox etc/cloud sync)

Waze - navigation with real-time traffic info (find this really useful on regular routes to get an idea of which routes to avoid, and the traffic info works!)

Touchpal Keyboard - nice "swype" clone

Pansi SMS- replacement SMS app lets you customise texts handling
