as i understand it from that website i posted earlier today.

You only need a tv license if your going to use your tv to watch broadcasts, and not just to use it for watching pre-recorded video's, dvd's and use a games console i.e. playstation.
It is against the law not to have a tv licence and have equipment capable of recieving broadcasts.............whether you watch them or not :)

No, if you only use your TV for Playstation etc you do not need a licence. But your TV can't be tuned in! You don't need to make any modificatiuons to it, except for not tuning it in.

Your right I apologise,I've just checked and as long as it isn't tuned in OR connected by an aerial then you don't need one. :)
but there are lots of grey areas around differing equipment that allows receiving of signals ,pcs etc
  • I know many people who got away without a licence in halls. Offically you must have one for each room if you have signed an individual contract for the room. A shared house on a joint contract only needs one licence. All you have to do is keep you ears open around campus - the TV people will hint that they will be coming around. Just hide your TV for a few days. If someone knocks on the door don't let them in.

The worst that'll happen is that if you get caught, you'll get a warning. Just pay for a licence then, and there'll be no fine.

  • I'll second what Furious Foggy has to say, take a risk,we got caught in halls about five years ago with no telly license, they simply told us to get one,no fine, not even a warning.

but surely if your television is in your room which is two or three floors high and your door is locked they won't be able to get in to see that you have a television!.....
  • Thats true, but they are a little sneeky. Anyone can get into shared corridors really, just by ringing a few buzzers. Then just just kind of fool people into thinking they are allowed in. They got through two locked doors before they knocked on my door, and they just peered into my room when I answered. I had had 20min warning tho (not that I had anything to hide of course)

so you do get a warning before they come?
  • Having worked for the lovely people at TVLicensing, I can tell you that the best way to get around to not paying but not being worried is the following:

Call up and set up a quarterly DD, before it comes out you can cancel the DD but the system takes so long to work out that you haven't actually paid that you've got a good 6 months before you even get a letter saying you haven't paid is there a problem, so, by then it's about January time, when you get the next letter, get someone else in the house to call up for a quarterly DD and again cancel it before it's taken and by the time the TV Licensing people have worked out you didn't pay, it's June and you've left!!!

This is however a bit of a hastle when you have you're own place and you want to stay there for a while!

PS Please be nice to the people on the phones, they are very understanding and when I was there we were all students just paying our way through Uni. The rudeness I encountered on the phones there was appaling, but that's a whole different rant!

    Best of luck! ;D
