    I totally agree.

I am so annoyed that I gave the OP benefit advice which he asked for and it now totally lost in 2 pages of absolute drivel about council housing.

    Please don't do this.

Well, I've said it earlier but I'll thank you again for your excellent post and advice. Much appreciated in this confusing & very stressful time for me.

  • Does anyone think I'm entitled to any kind of tax rebate? My final payslip has the tax code 810L.

It says I will get the redundancy pay within 6 days of leaving (on 30th Nov), but no P45 has come yet.

  • Your P45 should come through with your final wage slip. You may be entitled to a tax rebate if you don't find another job.

Is it your savings that are affecting your benefits? Ie they remove some entitlement for each amount of money over £6K. Did you you include your redundancy pay and this took you over the 6k.

Hi, you may have actually worked your full 11/12 weeks notice , if not you should be getting 11/12 years pay in lieu of notice so normally you would not be able to claim JSA until this period has passed !!! Although your 11/12 may not have been with the same employer in which case your lieu of notice would be a shorter period.

You will be entitled to contribution based JSA (based on your NI contributions during the last two tax years.) This is not means tested and any savings/capital/income will not make any difference.

You can then apply for HB and CT separately. This is means tested, so your savings (including your redundancy money) will be taken into account (on a sliding scale above £6000)

You are correct. Just phone the local council helpline re: claiming housing benefit and council tax benefit, she strongly advised claiming for JSA first at the Job Centre first. She said I shouldn't apply for the HB and CT benefit until I hear about my JSA claim (apply online, over the phone or go into the local job centre - gawd help me).

Thanks for the help people. Wish me luck

    It didn't, and still hasn't.

I don't have any savings, but will have this redundancy pay (and not before I make my JSA claim etc). I had to include this as one of the questions re: money specifically mentioned declaring redundancy pay. Not that I'm trying to hide anything from anyone, I'm not that daft

I went into the local Job Centre and enquired as to what I should do (don't newbies stand out like a sore thumb?!), and was basically told I can apply over the phone or online, but not before I finish on Fri 30th. He said to make sure I date the application (if online) - as Sat 1st Dec, my first day of unemployment.

I queried getting Housing Benefit & Council Tax benefit and he said that can be sorted at the same time as my JSA interview (I'll get a phone call 2-3 days after applying inviting me to "come in").

I mentioned the housing will be expecting full rent w/c Monday 3rd and the council will also expect FULL council tax that month, but he reassured me things would get sorted but not to apply in advance.

Great. I only have to be one week behind with my rent and they send me threatening letters.

I'll explain I'm waiting for my benefits to come through but they won't be sympathetic.

    Merry Christmas one and all.....

    :(
