hmm and what happened to all the monies generated by the sale of so many council houses? Which were sold off below market value............In fact pretty much everything was sold off by the Tories, the country owns little and owes much. Black Monday and Black Wednesday.............But lets keep on clutching at it being people on benefits, social housing, and Labour that got us into this mess.

You still haven't explained how social housing first came about - these houses just magically appeared overnight, did they? :p

Do you think that money is an outstanding 'debt', or has it been recouped through rental income?

    I totally agree.

I am so annoyed that I gave the OP benefit advice which he asked for and it now totally lost in 2 pages of absolute drivel about council housing.

    Please don't do this.

Not necessarily. It depends on your age and how much your rent is.

Yes you will have to make up the difference.

42, and my current FULL rent is £83 a week.

As you live in a council flat, you should get your full rent paid, although from April 2013 the bedroom tax may affect your claim if you have more than one bedroom. Your council tax should also be covered in full.

Presuming that you are over 25 (being in work for over 10 years) you will get JSA of £71 per week + rent + council tax. Although this may be affected by your redundancy payment, I am not sure if redundancy payments count towards capital.

Thanks, that's what I thought but from page 1:

    Weekly income £154.84
    Weekly outgoings £96.50

    Income minus outgoings = £58.34

You may be able to claim the following benefit(s), which we have estimated for you:

    Housing benefit £74.14 pw
Council Tax benefit £9.70 pw (that's only £38.80 per month )
Jobseekers Allowance (contribution based) £71.00 pw

Total weekly income £154.84 a week

Have you spoken to CCCS to inform them?

They said to phone them nearer the time, that was 2 weeks ago.... :(

You will be entitled to contribution based JSA (based on your NI contributions during the last two tax years.) This is not means tested and any savings/capital/income will not make any difference.

You can then apply for HB and CT separately. This is means tested, so your savings (including your redundancy money) will be taken into account (on a sliding scale above £6000)

Benefits do not take into account any debts.

If you are still out of work at the end of 6 months (when the contribution based JSA stops) you can then be assessed for income based JSA. If you are awarded this then you will be entitled to full HB (up to your local housing allowance for privately rented accommodation - check what this is on your local council website - dependant on age and status). You can have up to £6000 savings when you claim income based JSA.

Hopefully you will get a job before then.

If you are on a DMP ( you used a free service I hope!) you may want to let them know your change of circumstances so they can adjust your payments.

Please be aware that you are not allowed to pay off any of your debts unless there is a very good reason to do so e.g. threat of court action - seems unlikely as you are in a DMP. This would be seen as deprivation of capital (google for more information) and the various benefit departments woud treat you as if you still had the money.

You can, of course, spend your redundancy money on living expenses but you will be expected to use it sensibly and not blow it on the 'holiday of a lifetime' if you want to claim benefits in the long term.

Sorry to be the bearer of not too much good news but you will be fine!

Thank you so much for such an easy to understand post, I really appreciate that, cheers pmlindyloo

So, I apply for JSA online (when?), then apply for council tax benefit and housing benefit from my local council a few days afterwards? Time is running out :(

You won't get full hb or Ctb on jsa conts. Also you will have to pay water rates for yourself.

Hopefully you will find a new job by April cause if you are under occupying your hb will be cut, and Ctb is going in April and being replaced with a localised scheme, your are more than likely have to pay more ctax as well.

The water rates are included with the rent. The local housing did a deal with United Utilities to collect the water rates as part of the weekly rent....
