Does anyone use LPG for cooking?

Just after a bit of advice really.
We currently have oil central heating and an electric oven and hob. The oven I love but the hob I hate - it is one of the ones with the solid rings - takes an age to heat up.
I would like to replace the hob and I was thinking along the lines of a calor hob.
It would mean we wouldn't be solely dependent on electric for cooking, useful in the event of a power cut.
Does anyone know if would be cheaper to run a calor hob?
Does anyone know if the installation is expensive?
Once installed is it exactly the same as mains gas to use - temperature wise etc.
I've looked on the internet and can't really find what I'm looking for.
The other alternative would be to stay with an electric hob and maybe go for an induction hob - I've no experience of these either, cost to run etc.
Any information would be appreciated.

Hi ash28 im in exactly the same situation as you, have oil central heating but have no mains gas where i live, i bought a duel fuel oven 2 years ago gas hob and electric oven. my electricity bill has dropped dramatically from changing to gas, i bought 2 of the large red gas bottles 2 years ago i think it was about £90 to buy both but i'm still using the first bottle i bought and not started the second one yet. the installation for the pipe work was about £80 which i though wasn't to bad. i try to cook everything on the gas hob instead of putting everything in the oven like stews etc, it works exactly the same as mains gas, i also bought a slow cooker which saves me putting the oven on. so i would say go for it i wish i changed years ago.0

Thanks for that toejumper, that's really useful.
I really love the oven we have, never thought I would say that about an electric oven - but there you go, I actually prefer it to my gas oven in our last house.
The hob is a totally different matter - and I hate it.
I was leaning towards a calor hob and I think you've just helped make my mind up.0 -
Hi I also have a LPG gas hob very cheap to run as it does not use much gas. Also when you go out to buy one a lot of manufactures supply conversion kits the the range is much more than you first think. I purchase a Siemens and the conversation kit was included, don't think I paid for but did buy a dishwasher, fridge and freezer at the same time.

Thanks Dullnote.
That's useful to know - I had been looking at LPG hobs online and the choice did seem quite (well, very) small.0 -
We have a six burner LPG hob and we find that a 13kg bottle of propane lasts around 18 months, perhaps slightly more.0

Wow!! I have a 6 burner hob also, with 47kg propane bottles. One usually lasts about 6-8 months, but we do a lot of hob cooking, stir fries, chicken for the dogs etc!!As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -
the oven i bought is a five burner and had a conversion kit with it, the plumber who did the pipe work also converted the hob for me for £80. i also use a three tier steamer so i only use one gas ring to cook all my veg & rice that cuts down on my gas consumption. and in winter my kitchen can be quite cold so the gas ring heats the kitchen up to. i also had a solid plate hob and loathed it.0

We have oil central heating and use a range cooker and gas fire connected to 47kg Calor cylinders. We pay £57 per cylinder and one usually lasts around a month in winter when the fire's being used and up to 3 months over summer. I think it costs us around £250 a year for gas (family of four). In deep...0

When we moved into our house 2 years ago we struggled with a traditional ceramic electric hob. We changed to an induction hob and I have to say in my opinion it is as good as gas! The hobs are quite expensive so it would be worth weighing up the benefits against an LPG gas hob. I didn't know you could get LPG gas hobs though in hindsight we would have had the practicalities of where to store the bottle!Mortgage free wannabeMortgage (November 2010) £135,850Mortgage (November 2020) £4,7840

Only problem I had when renewing a calor hob was finding a fitter who was registered to do it.0
