(They are very unlikely to say yes go ahead.)

I am not to sure about that one! as over a year ago i was using a product and disscovered it was very good to use in a totally different way as to that of which it was meant to be! now i contacted the manufacturers about this and since then they have had their biggest sales yet to a market they themselves never thought off! i did contact them if it was possible to make up a solution for me to do testing on it never came months later it was selling on the shop shelves! i never got a thanks off this manufacturer although they did after a while offer me a different product to resell under own name label, knocked it back as this was not the product i saw Potential in. i see the same Potential in this product but in a far bigger scale so dont want to get shaffted again!

(But as others have said perhaps try to make a similar product with slightly different ingredients) Yes think thats the route i will take!

    thanks for replies!

Ah I see. So you have already gone to the manufacturer.

Do not see the bad experience here too negatively. That is how you learn in business. Many would say it is the only way you can learn in business.

I have heard that there are tremendeous mark ups on products like this so that means that there are many large firms willing to spend a lot of money on them. If you are going to compete with the big boys on a new product them you will need to spend as well I would have thought. Is there a possibility of getting another product and going to the manufacturer of this product and with your experience of dealing with manufacturers come up with a deal of some sort?

I have not gone to the manufacturer that was the last product i was talking about! what happened there was i decided to try this particular product for something completely different to that it was sold as,

I was quite impressed contacted the company involved to tell them about my findings, promoted it on web forums etc: they then had their biggest sales ever to a market they could not have dreamed off!
i had other ideas that i wanted to do with this product and told them about it asked for samples to do some testing, they never got back to me months later they were selling it on the shelves! i recieved nothing from this company so thats why i said i dont want to be shaffed again!
perhaps i gave to much info! and some office worker in the uk will be getting back slapped for sales rising worlwide!

(Do not see the bad experience here too negatively. That is how you learn in business. Many would say it is the only way you can learn in business.) yes i agree with that!

Maybe your talent is finding new uses for existing products. What about the idea of a website and/or forum where you can start discussions or a blog. The revenue would come from adverts a bit like this forum. Not adverts for the products under discussion (website visitors would see through that immediately) but other products maybe associated with the product. Like if you found that a particular brand of purfume could be good at restoring antiques you might get a lot of antitque collectors visiting your site and be able to attract advertising revenue from antique valuers. It is a deliberately unrealsitic example, but I hope you see what I am saying.

Isn't selling something as something it isn't fraud?

The OP is selling something as something it is *as well as being the thing it was originally sold as*. No real problem there. It's like selling fairy liquid which also has properties as a cement plasticiser - it is both, but Fairy only promote one use.

Fair enough, but I didn't get the impression the OP planned to print on the bottle labels eg 'This is Coca Cola but I'm selling it as lavatory cleaner because it cleans lavs'?

Correct! and as you will find there are many products on the market that do different things but are only promoted to do one thing!

    errata

I asked if i would be able to do this! my thoughts at first would be to contact a manufacturer of a product to ask if they would supply me with the materials of a product that interested me buy of them in bulk and re-lable that product as a completely different product and sell to a different market all together!

That was my first thoughts but dont think i will be able to do that!

As you would be marketing a 'new' product then if there is the possibility of the substance being hazardous then it will be necessary to have it tested and approved. You can not rely on the original manufacturer as they did not get it approved for your purpose.

This is not a cheap option.

The original product is not hazardous!
