re-bottling a product?

If you came across a product that was made for one purpose but found out it was also excellent to do another purpose! and the manufacturers had no idea!
What would you do?
So how would i go about to re-bottling this and sell it as a totaly different product to that which it is sold as now? Are ingredients protected?
this product rebottled would solve a long time problem for home owners and commercial alike!
I have ideas as to how to market it but can i just re-bottle it and put my own name to it?
Advice needed thanks!

Could you go to a manufacturing chemist and get your own formula made up to avoid complications and to prevent people guessing it as easily and cutting you out? For instance there is negligible practical difference between shower gel, shampoo and fairy liquid, but they are sold differently with different attributes to make them appear specialist.
Or the smoke fluid I use which is high grade paraffin oil and costs 15 times the low grade stuff, and is given a mysterious name to obfuscate its true nature.
Be aware of testing for safety if the product is being ingested in any way, but if it is using hair conditioner to untangle felt it may be less pressing.0 -
The ingredients wont be protected, so there is no reason you couldn't invent your own product.
You would have a problem if you were attempting to trade on the back of the other brand.0 -
You would need to discuss it with the manufacturer. They are very unlikely to say yes go ahead. If the manufacturer was not informed and found out about it they would simply cut off your supply (they will know the supply chain well and make sure that all distributers and suppliers know about you). Either way it it seems futile to even consider it.
But as others have said perhaps try to make a similar product with slightly different ingredients. You would probably need the help of an industrial chemist.0 -

I am not to sure about that one! as over a year ago i was using a product and disscovered it was very good to use in a totally different way as to that of which it was meant to be! now i contacted the manufacturers about this and since then they have had their biggest sales yet to a market they themselves never thought off! i did contact them if it was possible to make up a solution for me to do testing on it never came months later it was selling on the shop shelves! i never got a thanks off this manufacturer although they did after a while offer me a different product to resell under own name label, knocked it back as this was not the product i saw Potential in. i see the same Potential in this product but in a far bigger scale so dont want to get shaffted again!
(But as others have said perhaps try to make a similar product with slightly different ingredients) Yes think thats the route i will take!
thanks for replies!0 -
How long before other people discover the same as you. With the power of the internet, not long. For instance, I tried using hair shampoo to clean my car and discovered it did a better job than the expensive car shampoo, so now that is what I use.Never Knowingly Understood.

Both of these product have been selling for a long time, the latter one the longest, someone may/maynot have stumbled across other uses for it and may not have given it a second thought!
i get what you are saying about shampoo been doing that myself for years!
but the shampoo is not a solution to a problem unlike the one i am talking about!
there are many products out there that can be used for different uses and not the intended use it was made for!0 -
Sounds really exciting to be honest - hope you can get a few sample batches made up and get them out to potential clients to try in exchange for their testimonials - before you know it, you'll have a decent business on your hands for negligible outlay!0

Funny you should say that!
I have used it in family/friends houses and they think it is brillant stuff!
to see what the response would be and all not some have been delighted with it! asking what it is etc: they have told others about it and people have asked where can they buy this from!
which was the response i was looking for! tells me it will sell,
Now just need to get my own stuff made up!0 -
Jamesy, in all honesty I have no idea, but just wanted to wish you good luck. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
