Unable to cap my Orange account
Options
First time poster so takeit easy with me!, After reading some horror stories on here about lost mobile phones i decided to put a cap on my phone usage . after ringing Orange customer services i was told that it was not possible, the only thing they suggested was to ring them to block the phone. Does any one have any alternative suggestions ?

It's not a service they offer.
You need to set a pin on your sim and device - preventing the sim being used if removed from the phone; make sure that you understand what your tariff provides and use accordingly.
With respect there are only horror stories from people who do thinking after an event, rather than before it - You've managed to get it the right way round!0 -
What to can do is put a block on international numbers (as that's what most stolen phones are used for).
Just call cs and ask them to apply it... just remember to have to taken off if you travel outside the UK or it won't work.0 -
I will repeat what I wrote recently on another thread
- Most Networks currently do not have capping or the sort of financial scrutiny that some of you say they should. I agree that this would be a good addition and hopefully may come in. In the meantime, however, customers need to know the situation with their network and take the relevant precautions.
- Some networks do offer capping. People are free to contract with these networks to avoid these large bills.
- Phone networks offer at least 2 levels of protection - pin/sim lock that will prevent the sim being used on another phone and phone lock that means you have to enter a code every time you want to use the handset.
- In addition, the screen lock facility can be set to 1 minute or more/less to ensure that you have to use the screen lock automatically.
- The PAYG option is always there
- The network will cover any call costs incurred after they have been notified of the phone being stolen.
To that I would add the very sensible point that Jon 01 suggested re international numbers.0 - Most Networks currently do not have capping or the sort of financial scrutiny that some of you say they should. I would get them to confirm by email they don't cap so if problems do occur you can refer to it if you have any problems in the future and want to consider further action0

What future events?
Tesco and some T-mobile contracts can be capped the rest of the insustry does not offer the service. I don't see how if you (or a theif) runs up a big bill in the future an email saying they do not offer a capped service would help anyones case..
As has been said a sim and Phone lock are the best defence, every phone can set and use them, people don't because it's a percieved hassle putting in the pin all the time.0 -

If the unfortunate happens to OP he/she can show they attempted to put a cap on the bill but were refused. I doubt Orange will have much luck convincing a judge their actions were reasonable.
Sim/phone locks are not fool proof and providers can put caps on bills. The fact they choose not too is to generate more money. They are often quick to if they feel that any bill incurred may not get paid.
Unlikely this argument of we do not do caps would wash with a judge in a small claims court.0 -
Its not as though Orange are being unreasonable. They simply don't have the ability to do it on their post paid systems.0

Sorry I still don't follow how that helps.
It's not they were refused personally, they ware asking for a service that Orange do not offer to anyone. Why the networks don't offer it as a service is irrlevent, they just don't.
If Orange offered the service to some people but not others, or used to offer it but now don't for some reason you may have a chance. However you can't demand a service that the supplier does not offer (and has not ever offered) and then later on try to use that in a court, you'd be dismissed immediatly.0 -

The days where big businesses could hide behind we don't offer this and it's not our duty to protect the customer are long gone.
Orange will need to explain why they can't put in simple measures to help stop fraud especially when the likes of tesco's and Virgin have shown it can be easily done.
I'm comfortable with the fact that if I asked my provider to put in place protection to help stop fraudulent activity and they refused simply because they don't offer the service when other are capable of doing it I would win a litigation battle if the unfortunate happened.0 -
Would you? When you KNEW they didn't offer the service? What happened to asking questions BEFORE signing up to agreements?
With device and SIM pins this is a non issue - There's no need to complicate it with posturing about litigation after the fact.0
