What will shorten the life of your grate is HOT ash below and above. If you have a good deep layer of ash then the ash in the tray wont be hot

I'd back what Mucky and Suki are saying. Let WOOD ash build up over the bars. Ash from smokeless fuel or coal, on the other hand, should never be allowed to block the flow of air from beneath - both as an aid to combustion and as a means of keeping the bars from overheating.

Which is cheaper wood, coal or electricity? I don't know how to work it out.

Hey, which is cheap, I think it should depend on your situations. For example, your city is just a little cold and you just need a heater in the coldest days, you should choose gas as fuel, convenient and cheap. However, if you have to use heater the whole winter, I think wood is a nice choice, it is much cheaper than gas and electricity in the long term.
    Hope my answer is helpful!

    Wrong

Unless you have unlimited free wood then mains gas is the cheapest

Even oil and LPG will be cheaper
